Whittlesea Bakehouse

Hi everyone as most of you know, last year I did a few virtual 🥧reviews to support our Victorian friends crippled by stage 4 lockdown restrictions. One of these bakeries was Whittlesea Bakehouse. As soon as the boys sent me the photos of their glorious 🥧’s, I knew as soon restrictions lifted I needed to get down there and taste these beauties first hand. So that’s exactly what I did.
Whittlesea Bakehouse is situated approximately 40km north east of the Melb CBD. In the early days this town had two running saw mills. Taking the timber from Kinglake and Whittlesea region to the Melbourne CBD for milling.
Now every man’s dream is to marry a publicans daughter !!!! But Adrian did one better, he married a bakers daughter 🥧🥧🥧🥧. This is a classic love story ❤️❤️.
Adrian was a regular visitor to this bakery for a number of years, but he wasn’t popping in just for a 🥧. He was there to see Frances the owners daughter. After a few years of persistence and hundreds of 🥧’s later, Adrian and Frances eventually hooked up and the rest as they say is history. Adrian left his original job as a mechanic and starting working at the bakery.
The bakery has been in the extended family for many many years and recently Adrian and Frances have taken over from the in-laws.
Choosing a 🥧 for me to review this week was bloody easy. I wanted to review the same 🥧 I did the virtual review on last year. This was the famous “Whittlesea” This beast consists of – 12 hour slow cooked beef brisket, BBQ onions, cracked pepper and camembert cheese. I was sweating, drooling and dying with anticipation to smash this 🥧.
🥧🥧🥧🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧🥧🥧🥧
1. Value for Money – $5.70 !!!! Are you serious this is awesome value !!!! Just take a look at the photos and the quality of ingredients in this masterpiece. This 🥧 was more than generous in size. This represents crazy crazy value. 10/10
2. Meat Ratio – Choc a bloc !!!
The standout was the size of those 12 hour slow cooked chunks of meat. Jam packed !! 10/10
3. Meat Flavour – Once again 12 hour slow cooked beef brisket. OMG !! OMG !!Then add BBQ onions and Camembert cheese. Words cannot describe the flavor of this 🥧. Every bite felt like Xmas morning and I didn’t want it to end. 10/10
4. Pastry – The top was crispy and flakey, while the bottom was delicious and firm. The pastry was PERFECT !!! 10/10
5. Temperature – With over 20 years of experience I’m fairly positive these guys would have the temperature down pat and they nailed it. 10/10
🥧 Overall Virtual Rating 50/50 🥧
Yep a PERFECT score 👍👍🥇🥇🏆🏆🎉🎉. Only because this 🥧 was absolutely PERFECT in every way. These guys have nailed all five categories and then some. To be honest, I walked out of that bakery instantly knowing this was going to be a perfect score. For me the Meat Flavor was insane. I could dribble on and on for ages, but seriously guys just get to this bakery and try one yourself.
This place is truly amazing and once again any business that is still striving and surviving after 20 years must be doing something right. The standout for me is bakers Adrian’s and Michael’s commitment to continue to produce quality products at more than competitive prices.
Whittlesea Bakehouse now joins Blackbutt Bakery as the only perfect scores given. Therefore making this bakery a ABSOLUTE must visit. It’s only a short 40/45 mins from Melbourne and totally worth the drive. The bakery itself is massive and the range of products is off the charts.
The only negative was a massive case of food coma. Adrian and Michael kept bringing me 🥧 after 🥧 out of the oven. I set a new personal best for this review. I had three maybe four 🥧’s, half a sausage roll and a vanilla slice !!!! I’ve gotta say the vanilla slice was right up the with the best I’ve had.
Thanks to Adrian, Michael and the staff for their hospitality. I’m so privileged to be able to share these stories and play a small part in promoting these family owned businesses. I will be back that’s for sure and cannot wait to get stuck into your 🥧’s again.
