Waikerie Bakery
(Waikerie SA)

After leaving Mildura, it was time to cross the border and head into South Australia. The next place on my list was the little town of Waikerie. Waikerie is a small town sitting on the cliffs above the Murray River in the heart of South Australia’s rich Riverland district. It is surrounded by citrus orchards and extensive stands of apricots, peaches, pears and plums. Fruit aside i was in town to check out the Waikerie Bakery
and meet a ripping fella named Scott who owns it.

The bakery itself has been in operation for over 100 years. Scott and his family have been here for over tick over 30 years. Scott’s a third generation baker and was in and around the bakery from a very young age. The history in this place is quite phenomenal. In the hundred odd years of operation, the place has only had 3 to 4 owners.

The bakery itself has a very impressive cabinet display and has a nice little seating area out the front. The baking area out the back had a huge gas oven. This thing was massive and very impressive. To get a full tour of a building that’s over a 100 was pretty special. After getting the tour, it was time to crack on and eat some 🥧’s and let Scott get back to work.

Once again, another bakery with a great selection of 🥧’s on offer. From the moment I saw the menu there was only one 🥧 that I wanted to try and that was the chunky steak and shiraz. It looked absolutely magnificent and I couldn’t wait to get stuck into it.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.20 is a dead set steal. Great size, great depth and jammed packed, you couldn’t ask for anything more. 10/10

2. Meat & Fill Ratio – Jammed packed full of chunky meat. 10/10

3. Flavour – Terrific !!! Slow cooked chunky steak bathed in a shiraz wine, it doesn’t get much better than this. The meat was cooked beautifully and melted in your mouth, while the shiraz blended in perfectly. The pics my indicate the meat was dry, but it was far from that. The flavour was sensational, great job. 9/10

4. Pastry – The overall quality of this pastry was pretty good. Pastry base iwas a little bit under done. Fill level was great as was the color and stability. Pretty even looking 🥧 tops . The bottom thickness was very good in places, but just not pushed out evenly so one side was thicker then the other. Great job lads 8.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – No issues at all 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 47.5/50 🥧🥧

This was close to the perfect 🥧 as you could get. To be honest there wasn’t much wrong with this product bar a couple of minor and I mean minor tweaks needed. The price point was perfect as was the fill ratio. The flavor was stunning, and the pastry was near perfect. This was a quality 🥧 and one I could easily have again in a heartbeat. Excellent job Scott and team.

If your in and around the Waikerie area 100% add this place to your list. It’s not very often you get to visit a bakery that’s over 100 years old and serves up quality products like this one.

A huge thanks to Scott and his amazing team for having me in and showing me around his incredible bakery. I literally rang Scott the morning of my visit and he was more than happy to take time out of his busy day and share his 🥧 story with me, what a legend. I cannot wait to return the area early next year and get out the boat and have a ski with this champion.

Waikerie is a sensational little town with a fair bit to see and do. If your self contained and looking for a great overnighter the Silo Art RV Park is a little ripper. The silo art is awesome and it’s a short stroll into town. Highly recommend !!!
