Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Village Bakehouse
(Dubbo NSW)
June, 2026
My current NSW/QLD road trip is well under way and day two saw us lob into Dubbo to catch up with the team from Village Bakehouse. It’s been about 5 years since my last visit to Dubbo and I was super keen to meet the team, and sit down to hear about this families incredible 🥧 journey.
The Stevenson’s family 🥧journey started back in 1918, 4 generations and 108 years later this journey is still expanding and the family has now expanded to 4 locations (Dubbo, Orange, Bathurst & Newcastle). Brothers Bill, Rob, and John all learned to walk in the bakery, but they were thrust into a deeper role when their father passed away suddenly at an early age. All 3 brothers learnt the trade and have now passed this knowledge onto there children who all play an active role in this incredible business, that now employ over 150 staff.
The Dubbo Bakery is located in Darling Street and the store is absolutely stunning. The fit out, seating area and more importantly the cabinet display super impressive. The products on display are all made fresh and some in the full view of the public. I particularly like the indoor and outdoor seating area, the fire place is roaring which makes the area very cosy. After sitting down and chatting to the family it was finally time to get to the warmer and choose a 🥧 to review.
Around 10 flavours on the menu to choose from including 4 from their signature 🥧 range. One flavour in particular caught my eye and that was the “chunky beef, cheese & jalapeño”, this particular flavour is one of my favourites and I couldn’t wait to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $9.50 is 100% up there in price for a country bakery. In saying that you need to consider that all the signature 🥧’s weigh in at 280 grams. This is about 60/70 grams above industry standard 🥧’s. I’ve reviewed a stack of these flavoured 🥧’s recently and they have all have priced between $8 and $10. 8/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – About 95% full. Only a few small air pockets in the corners that could have been filled. Apart from that this was a very healthy filled 🥧. 9.5/10
3. Flavour – The overall flavour was pretty good. The decent sized meat chucks (clearly evident in pics ) were super tender and tasted wonderful. The melted cheese blended in well and the jalapeños had a little bite, but nothing too serious. The melted cheese added to the overall flavour and wasn’t overpowering. Only negative, I would have liked to have seen a smidge more gravy. Solid flavour, thoroughly enjoyed 8/10
4. Pastry – The golden colour and lack of pastry shrinkage caught my eye straight away, it was perfect. For a 280 gram 🥧, the stability was also very good and the 🥧 held firm right to the last bite. The overall bakes had some positives and negatives, let’s start with the positives. The top bake thickness and bottom bake was right on the money, but the top bake was under done (wet lines) while the bottom bake was too think. These negatives are only minor and a very easy fix. A few little points to work on, but overall the positives far out weighed the negatives 7.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 43/50🥧🥧
For a bakery that pumps out some serious numbers Jarrod and his team have produced a really solid product. The “Karen’s” out there will whinge about the $9.50 range, but at 280 grams. the price is the price and cost of ingredients and freight have gone through the roof and that needs to be considered. The 🥧 was 95% full, the flavour was impressive as was the pastry. Yes there was a couple of things to work on, but these were minor. My overall experience was great and this was a product I’d easily have again. Well done Jarrod, keep up the good work.
100% add this bakery to your travel plans. I’ve visited hundreds and hundreds of bakeries and this layout/design is up there with the best. There is so much room to sit, relax and catch up with friends. The bakery also has a full breakfast and lunch menu, so if 🥧’s aren’t you go there is plenty of other options available.
I cannot thank the entire team enough for having me in and allowing me to share there families incredible 🥧 journey. The 🥧 journey started back in 1918 and after 108 years it’s not showing any signs of slowing down. This is a massive operation and this operation takes a huge team to operate. This bakery is a family operation through and through and I absolutely love that. Every family member has a role and does that role very well and that why this is a highly successful bakery. All the best guys, see you next time I’m in the area.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
