Review No 57
Tully Bakery
(Tully QLD)

Sept 2024

My visit to Silkwood was spectacular, but as they say all good things must come to an end. I didn’t have to travel that far to my next review only 26km down the road. My next destination was the a sugarcane town of Tully. Tully is best known for being one of the wettest towns in Australia, and home to the 7.9 m (25 ft 11 in) tall Golden Gumboot. The Gumboot is massive and 100% worth the look, but just down the road was the real reason I was in town. I’d lined up a visit to see Brin and April from the Tully Bakery. You cannot miss this this bakery it’s a beautiful building located right in the Main Street not far from the Golden Gumboot.

Brin has been in the baking game most of his life and he and April have been operating this bakery for the last 18 years, but have only been at this current location for a tick over 4 years.

The first thing you will notice when you walk in the door is how clean the place is !!! Absolutely spotless !!! The second is the impressive cabinet display and 🥧 warmer. Every single item looked incredible and gee wizz making a decision on what to order in the place would be a difficult decision. My mind was racing all over the place and I was getting a tad excited, so we decided to choose a 🥧 and get this review started.

There is a great selection of 🥧’s on the menu, but as I glanced over the options one in particular, grabbed my attention. I was drawn to the threaded pork and bourbon. I’ve reviewed a few of these flavoured 🥧’s in the past, but not threaded pork. As soon as it came out of the warmer I knew I’d made the right choice.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6 represented fantastic value for what could be classified at a gourmet style 🥧. While it wasn’t huge in the depth department the diameter was more than satisfactory. Also weighing in at 265g is well above industry standard, therefore making this 🥧 more than affordable. 9.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Only a small 🥧 in depth, but it was totally full. Great job !!! 10/10

3. Flavour – Awesome !!! The threaded pork was incredibly tender and cooked beautifully. The bourbon sauce was clearly evident, which I enjoyed and wasn’t overpowering at all. Not much wrong with this flavour at all. Loved it guys great job. 9.5/10

4. Pastry – Similar to the flavour there wasn’t much wrong wrong with the pastry either. The color, shape, shrinkage, stability and bake thinkinesses were all perfect in my opinion. It was only the bakes that stopped at 10/10 score. Both the top and bottom bakes were slightly underdone and needed more time in the oven. Apart from that the pastry was terrific. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!!

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧

I’m so glad I choose this particular flavoured 🥧, as I absolutely loved it. All five scoring categories were very consistent. It was only the bake time that needed tweaking. The color and pastry flavour were sensational as was the overall flavour. Brin and his team have done a wonderful job with this one. Trust me your going to really enjoy this 🥧.

100% add this cracking bakery to your travel plans. The pork and bourbon 🥧 alone is worth the visit. Heads up the crew are having a well earned break just after Christmas and will be re-opening mid January. Tully itself is a great little town that’s worth the look around, plus your only a short drive to Mission Beach.

A massive thanks to Brin and April for taking the time out of their busy schedules to show me around and share their 🥧 journey. These guys work their guts out every day and run a cracking business and deserve every success that comes there way. All the best guys hopefully catch you for a🍺 next year.
