2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 6
Tinana Hot Bread Shop
(Maryborough QLD)

OCT 2024

Hervey Bay was terrific and it was pretty awesome catching up with family, friends and people I have not seen for quite some time. Sadly, all good things must come to an end and it was time to continue south and head off to the next review. My next bakery was the Tinana Hot Bread Shop
in Maryborough QLD . Funny this was a bakery I regularly visited back in 1997 when I lived in the area.

It was here I met the owner Shannon. Shannon’s 🥧 journey is quite remarkable. This bakery was Shannon’s first job, she worked here from the age of 13 and left when she finished school. After school she traveled and work exclusively in the travel industry. Then 10 years ago she was asked to manage the place, eventually buying the bakery 4 years ago and hasn’t looked back. With no formal baking experience Shannon has assembled a terrific team around her including apprentice Ellie who baked the 🥧 I was about to eat.

When I walked in the door I nearly didn’t recognize the place. The whole shop has had a complete renovation and the new cabinets, sandwich bar, bread racks and 🥧 warmer look sensational. The boys at
Complete Display Equipment
have done an epic job with these. It’s one thing to have great cabinets, but you still have to fill them up with great products and that’s what Shannon and her team have done exceptionally well.

The new 🥧 warmer is filled with a great selection of old school favourites. For this weeks review I went a “Curry Beef” it’s been a while since I’ve reviewed one of these and this one looked particularly good.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.20 is great value. Normal shaped in size and diameter and weighing around industry standard. 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – A few small air pockets here and there, but overall pretty full. 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Nothing flash just a good old fashion mild curry flavour. Even though it was only mild, the flavour was more than acceptable.
The mince and diced beef were cooked right through and tasted great. The only negative and this is just my own opinion is that I would have liked the curry flavour to be a bit stronger. 8/10

4. Pastry – Ellie has done a great job with this pastry. The only real negative was the shrinkage on the top and the 🥧 was a little out of shape. The stability, both bakes and bake thicknesses were all nailed and looked fantastic. The pastry flavour had a great taste to it. Well done Ellie, I really enjoyed the pastry in this 🥧. 9/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45.5/50 🥧🥧

Apprentice Ellie has done a terrific job with this 🥧. The flavour was basic, but had a really nice taste to it. The combination of mince and diced beef was cooked great. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of a stronger curry flavour, but I understand that’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The $6.20 price tag was cheap and the 🥧 was pretty much full. The color and stability were all ok, but there was a little bit of shrinkage on the top and slightly out of shape. The bakes and bake thickness were spot on and that’s a credit to Ellie. No real negatives to report just a good old fashion curry 🥧.

100% add this bakery to your list. There is plenty of parking on site and very assessable. Every bakery product you could imagine is in these cabinets so your going to have a difficult time choosing.

To Shannon and the rest of the staff a big thank you for having me in and allowing me to share your 🥧 journey. The work you have put into this shop is absolutely incredible. There is a real sense of community and family feeling when you enter this shop and that’s a real credit to Shannon and her staff. Yet another example of a non qualified baker having success in the industry, but this success has been built on a lot of hard work. Great work Shannon and her team.
