After smashing a few of The Grawin General Store’s 🥧’s we continued our pubs in the scrub trek and eventually ended up at
Sheepyard Opalfields, Sheepyard Inn. This would have to be up there with one of the most quirkiest pubs I’ve ever visited. This place is legendary for it’s cold beer and best of all the characters that hang out and drink here.
The pub has inside/outside eating areas, plenty of parking and the best part of all there is camping available out the back of the pub (check road conditions) You can also try your luck with a having a fossick for some opals in one of the pubs designated specking areas.
In the food department this iconic 🇦🇺 pub offers regular food menu items, plus specials like Sunday roasts, wood fired pizza and best of all homemade 🥧’s. After hearing this I made a few calls and lined up to meet Rachel at the pub.
As you would appreciate 🥧’s are a added menu item here so the flavours and 🥧 numbers do vary from day to day. The day of my visit there was only one flavour available, and that was the “beef cheek and mushroom” This is a epic combo of ingredients and I couldn’t wait to tuck in.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – This 🥧 was $7 which is the same price as the General Store up the road and once again in my opinion hasn’t changed !!! This price is way too cheap. The size, depth and diameter was exactly the same as well and it was heavy and full 🥧. Great value 10/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full, with huge chunks of beef cheek 10/10
3. Flavour – The flavour was wonderful !! The beef cheek melted in your mouth, the mushrooms were clearly evident and the rich dark gravy sauce was devine. Rachel has done a great job with this flavour. Well done. 8.5/10
4. Pastry – From first glance you might have jad concerns about this pastry, but all those concerns left with the very first bite. Yes the color was a little dark and shape a little wonky, but everything else was great. The stability and both bake thicknesses were excellent as was the pastries overall flavour and texture. 7/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10

Rachel you have produced a wonderful product that I absolutely loved. The flavour for me was easily the best part, that beef cheek was cooked beautifully and melted in your mouth. $7 was extremely well priced and the 🥧 was full. The overall experience was excellent and not expected. The only negative was, I had to share this 🥧 with my fellow traveling companions and I struggle with sharing good food. It’s such a bonus to go to these country pubs and get a quality 🥧 and his experience was no different. Well done team, highly recommended.
A huge thanks to Rachel and the team for having me out, I absolutely love this pub. Every time I come out here the experience gets better and better and the characters you meet leave a lasting impression. Rachel your 🥧 was beautiful and you have a true 🥧 making talent. I cannot wait to get back out to the Sheepyard to smash a 🥧 and share some 🍺’s and yarns with the locals.
The General Store and the pubs in the scrub are 100% worth visiting. It’s only a 3/4 hour drive from Lighting Ridge and trust me you won’t be disappointed. There is so much to see and explore out here so give yourself a full day.
