The Rocks Shop

(Carpenter Rocks SA)

February 2026

It was sad to leave Mt Gambier as we had such an awesome time exporing the area, but as they say the show must roll on. While we were in town, I had a flood of messages and locals telling me I’ve gotta get down to Carpenter Rocks and try the 🥧’s. After hearing this we re-arranged our schedule and decided to head down that way for a few days to check out the area and try the 🥧’s.

Carpenter Rocks is a tranquil, scenic fishing village on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, located 35–38 km south of Mount Gambier. Known for its rugged coastline, rock lobster/crayfish industry, and a safe harbor at Bucks Bay for fishing boats. It also offers a epic free camp that’s only walking distance to the famous “Rocks Shop”

The Rocks Shop is a little convenience store/post office/servo/fish & chip shop and best of all extremely well known for its sensational 🥧’s. Current owner Addie has been here for nearly 20 years, but the shop itself would be easily be 60 plus years old. Located on Hercules Street the shop employs 4 staff and is open 7 days a week.

Addie has been in the food services game for many years and introduced 🥧’s to the business 15 years ago. These days the 🥧’s can be found at various places around the Mt Gambier area.

Addie has come up with a fantastic range of 🥧’s on the menu that includes traditional flavours and a assortment of gourmet options. Flavours such as meat lover, chicken parmigiana and pepperoni and cheese just the name a few. After looking at the menu I really only wanted one flavour and that was the “Crayfish & Prawn” As soon i cut the 🥧 in half I knew I’d made the right choice.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $12 might be steep in some people‘s opinion, but most scallop 🥧’s are around that $12 mark. Crayfish and prawns are at the top end price at the moment and these ones are coming fresh off the boat. The 🥧 itself was a decent size in both depth and diameter. Overall this was very good value in my opinion 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Jammed packed with fresh crayfish and prawns. Nothing more to say. 10/10

3 Flavour – Decent size chunks of fresh crayfish and prawns then added garlic in a creamy sauce. The overall flavour was amazing, the garlic was clearly evident, but not overpowering. The crayfish and prawns pieces were very generous and they were super fresh. The creamy sauce tasted great and complemented the other ingredients well. Overall the flavour was fantasic. 9/10

4. Pastry – The overall pastry was fabulous. Apart from both bakes being slightly underdone it was near perfect. The color, shape, shrinkage and most importantly the stability were all first class. Both bake thicknesses were spot on and the pastry had a nice flakey texture to it. Great job team. 9/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

Overall Rating

🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧

This was a sensational product and not far away from the perfect 🥧. It’s not very often you get to have fresh crayfish and prawns and this 🥧 lived up to all the hype and expectation. All five scoring categories were ultra consistent and be honest there wasn’t a lot wrong with this 🥧. The price point was very good considering the quality of ingredients and it was totally full. The pastry was there about’s and the flavour was devine. Addie you have absolutely nailed this 🥧, I would easily have another one in a heartbeat. We’ll done team fantastic product.

If your around the amount Gambier area you need to take the short drive down to Carpenter Rocks and try these 🥧’s. I will give you a tip, go early as these bad boys sell out fast.

A huge thanks to Addie, Bryce and the rest of the team for having me in. This was a epic visit and one I will remember for a very long time. Not only was the 🥧 next level the fish and chips was up there with the best I’ve had. For a little shop these 🥧’s have become famous around the Mount Gambier area and quite rightly so. Your doing an outstanding job Addie it was great to meet you and your team.

Carpenter Rocks and a quiet and super relaxing place to visit. The camp ground ($10 pay at shop) was excellent there is plenty of room to spread out, water access, toilets and a dump point. Also the area has pristine beaches and great walking tracks. 100% add this hidden gem to your travel plans.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
