The Oven Door Bakery
(Wanneroo WA)
Febuary 2025
After smashing a few 🥧’s at Andy’s joint it was time to head up to Wanneroo, which is located north of Perth. Shane from Home Grain Bakery did the introduction for this review and was kind enough to also drive me up. I was on my way to meet up with Stephen from the The Oven Door Bakery at Drovers.
Stephen has been in the baking industry for over 30 years and at one stage was working for Shane in his bakery before branching out and opening up his own place. With his wife Kristy right beside him, this duo have recently opened up their 4th store, now employing 30 plus staff.
For this review I visited there main store and hub at Wanneroo. The bakery is open 7 days a week, to say this place gets busy is a understatement. The bakery has plenty of seating and like most great bakeries the cabinet display was exceptional. Out the back was no different, the bakers were flat out making hundreds and hundreds of 🥧’s. Speaking of, I couldn’t help notice the golden color of the 🥧’s in the warmer, I was keen to get started.
The menu was filled with an extensive list, from traditional 🥧’s to gourmet ones as well. I chose the “Pepper Steak” for this review. This flavour is my all time favourite and it’s been a while since I’ve had one of these bad boys.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.50 was tremendous value for a 🥧 of this size, depth, and diameter. I didn’t get the actual weight, but it felt like a heavy 🥧. In this current market to score a 🥧 priced under seven bucks is terridic value. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full with a combination of mince and chunky steak, not one more ounce could have been squeezed into this 🥧. 10/10
3. Flavour – The flavour was really good. To be honest, it surprised me a little, in particular the after burn from the peppercorns. Don’t be alarmed the pepper flavour isn’t that hot but still enough to have an inpact. There was a mixture of high quality mince and chunky steak, which were both baked extremely well. For me personally the rich dark gravy sauce tasted absolutely beautiful and made the flavour what it was. Great job guys 9/10
4. Pastry – A few things to work on, but the overall pastry was more than acceptable. Firstly the pastry flavour was really nice and while the bottom bake was soft, the pastry tasted fantastic. Zero issues with the shape, color and stability, while there was some evident shrinkage, this was only minor. Both bakes were slightly underdone and had clear wet lines, while the top and bottom bake thicknesses needed work particularly the bottom thicknesses. This thickness and bake can easily be fixed, but in this case has affected the pastry score. 7/10
5. Serving Temperature – Excellent serving temp. Straight out of the oven into the mouth. 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧
If it wasn’t for the bakes and the bakes thicknesses, this could’ve been close to a perfect 🥧. Never the less I really enjoyed this product and would have no hesitation having another one. This was hotter than your average pepper steak 🥧 and I absolutely loved it. The rich dark gravy sauce that Stephen uses is an absolute masterstroke and worked a treat. $6.50 is priced sensationally well and the meat/fill ratio was perfect. The team have done a wonderful job with this one, great work guys.
Another awesome bakery to add to your WA list and the best part is that there are four locations you could go to. It’s no surprise that they are getting bigger and busier each day as their products are first class.
A huge thanks to Stephen for having me in and Shane for the introduction. This place is a serious operation and getting bigger and bigger. One thing that stood out was Stephen’s care and passion for his staff. He wants them to be the best and produce the best possible products. Having one store can be tough but managing four and the 30 plus staff that go with it is extremely tough, but Stephen and Kristy are serious operators and do an outstanding job. Great to meet you legend and when I’m back in WA we will 100% catch up again.
