The Little Red Grape
(Sevenhill SA)
My stay in Hahndorf was sensational apart from the hangover on the last day 😂 but it was time to hit the road and make tracks. I decided to make my way north and head up towards the famous underground bakery at Farina. Before that I wanted to stop in and see the team at The Little Red Grape Bakery at Sevenhill.
Sevenhill is located in the Clare Valley of South Australia, approximately 130 km north of Adelaide. Established in 1851 by Jesuits priests, Sevenhill has one of the oldest wineries within the Clare Valley region.
I’m sure the wine tasted great but I didn’t want a repeat of the Hahndorf hangover so I decided to stick to the 🥧’s. The bakery has been open for over 15 years, with the building been established way back in 1849. Current owners Steve and Jacqui have had this place for the last seven years and the joint is absolutely pumping.
This bakery is an experience, not only is the food fantastic, it’s fully licensed and stocked with the areas best wine and has two open fire places. This is a real family affair with Steve and Jackie’s children Amy and Tom also working in the place. The team have created a great environment here and the moment you walk into the bakery, you’re going to be blown away by the impeccable cabinet display. I’ve gotta give baker Ryan a plug, his doughnuts and Kitchener buns were off the charts. After tucking into a couple of them I wandered over to the 🥧 warmer to take a look.
The “Little Red Grape” has an epic selection of 🥧’s on offer. It’s also the home of the Official Great Aussie Pie Competitions Best Seafood 🥧 2024 and 2023. Choosing a 🥧 to review was going to be a difficult decision, but in the end I went for something totally left field and that was the steak and Diane. It’s been a long time since I’ve had one of these flavored 🥧’s and as it turned out this 🥧 was made by first year apprentice Holly.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8 is creeping up there in price but still very reasonable for 🥧 of this quality. As it should be, the 🥧 was a decent size in both depth and diameter plus it was full. 8/10
2. About 95% full, only a couple of tiny holes to be filled. Great job 9.5/10
3. Flavour – Devine !!! This was a simple steak and Diane pie, but the flavor was incredible. The meat chunks were huge melted in your mouth and they were cooked to perfection. The Diane sauce was sensational. Absolutely loved this flavor. 10/10
4. Pastry – The first year apprentice has done a great job with this one. The color stability, shape, and shrinkage were excellent. The bakes were just about there. Bottom bake was a little thick and needed a smidge more time while the top was there about’s as well. Great job Holly. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – No issues at all 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46/50 🥧🥧
Terrific product it’s been so long since I’ve had a steak Diane 🥧 and this one was a beauty. The price point was reasonable, the 🥧 was chockablock full, the flavour couldn’t be faulted and the pastry was great. I need to emphasize the pastry was made by a first year apprentice and she’s done an amazing job. She was so nervous but she didn’t need to be. If she’s doing this in her first year I cannot wait to see her products when she’s qualified. Yeah, there are a few things to work on, but overall a really consistent 🥧 and one I thoroughly enjoyed. Cracking bakery, cracking 🥧, cracking food and this place is licensed !!! What more could you ask for? 100% add this place to your list. Pop in, sit down enjoy a 🥧 and a nice glass of 🍷
To the whole Little Red Grape crew a huge thanks for having me in and taking the time to show me around your awesome bakery. This place isn’t just a bakery, it’s an an experience and an experience everyone should try at least once. These guys have worked so hard and have achieved such amazing results, but the journey is not finished yet. All the best guys, I will 100% be coming back to see you again.
That whole area of Burra, Claire, Sevenhill, Peterbough etc is fantastic and 100% worth exploring. Give youself stacks of time as there is plenty to see and do. There is a stacks of free, low cost and pub camping in the area so take your pick and enjoy.
