The Hungry Pug
As mentioned in my recent post, the next few reviews will be from bakeries I have visited in the Atherton Tableland’s area. We kick things off tonight with the my review of The Hungry Pug Mareeba in Mareeba.
The craziest part about this review is that I wasn’t even looking for a 🥧. It was around 7am and I went into the cafe to grab a bacon n egg roll and a coffee for the bride. As soon as I walked into i saw these stunning homemade 🥧’s and nec minute i was introducing myself to owners Simon and Victoria.
The Hungry Pug Cafe is located in the Main Street of Mareeba and is open Mon and Tue 7am to 4pm and the remaining days 7am to 7.30pm.
There’s a good selection on offer here and like most bakeries your decision isn’t going to be a easy one, however mine was !! I wanted to give the “Cheeseburger 🥧” a test drive.
🥧THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – All
of the 🥧‘s sold here are $6 and that’s great value. They are all a very generous size and all home made. 9/10
2. Meat Ratio – Sadly the 🥧 I had had needed a lot more fill. While the photos looked worse then it actually was, it still needed a lot more fill. 5/10
3. Meat Flavour – Tasted exactly like a cheeseburger. Mince, cheese, pickles and sauce. The flavor in this 🥧 was terrific and I loved it. Overall great job !!! 9.5/10
4. Pastry – Really nice !!! While the pastry was soft, it’s stability was spot on. The pasty also had a beautiful taste to it was incredibly flakey. Only negative was the base was slightly underbaked and I mean slightly. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Spot on !!!! Excellent serving temp. 10/10

This was a great 🥧. As mentioned earlier I actually went into this cafe looking to order a bacon n egg roll and ended up having a 🥧 and doing a review. The flavor and price were spot on. As mentioned earlier the 🥧 tasted exactly like a cheeseburger but better. The homemade pasty was also great. The only real negative was the 🥧 needed more fill. As far as homemade 🥧’s go, this one gets a huge 👍‘s up. Victoria Isn’t a baker and yet she’s in the making these awesome homemade 🥧’s and having a crack every day. If your in Mareeba make sure you get into the The Hungry Pug Cafe and give one of these homemade 🥧’s a crack !!! In fact all the food here is superb.
As always a massive thanks to Simon and Victoria for their time. I caught both of them very much off guard when i popped and yet they were more than willing to show me around let me loose in their business.
If your around Mareeba and looking for places to camp, make sure you add Ringers Rest to your plans. $10 a night (Wiki) and Dave the host is a absolute legend. Very relaxing place and if your lucky you will wake up to the sight hot air balloons cruising past.
