The Freckled Duck
(Allansford VIC)

June 2025

After a busy week visiting bakeries, the plan was to have a PFD (Pie Free Day) and spend some time checking out the 12 Apostles and other parts of “The Great Ocean Road” As we all know plans can change and this was the case for me when I accidentally stumbled across a bakery called Freckled Duck Bakery at Allansford.

Allansford is a rural/residential town in western Victoria, 8km east of Warrnambool. On Ziegler Parade you will find The Freckled Duck Bakery. Opened during covid in 2021, this is a very cool and funky bakery, and a real family affair.

Warren and his wife, Prue, daughter Poppy, and son Solomon all work in the bakery. What got me straight away was the name. The story behind the bakery name is hilarious, but it’s a story for another day. Warren is more than happy to share the story when you pop in and see the team the next time you visit.

As you step inside, you’re greeted in an atmosphere of refined elegance, with an array of delectable food options that will leave you spoiled for choice. The cream buns, doughnuts, and other sweet treats were out of this world and I was getting massively, distracted. I suggested to Warren that we make our way over to the 🥧 warmer and begin this review.

14 plus flavours to choose from, and something that will suit everyone. From your classic bakery favourites to your exotic gourmet, they have done a wonderful job creating this menu. I decided to go with something a little different this week. Warren mentioned a 🥧 recipe he created after sharing a pulled pork dinner with great friends Shazza and Brett Lewis. This was a 12 hour slow cooked pulled pork with smokey bbq sauce. It sounded sensational, so that’s the one I went with.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $7.40 for any gourmet 🥧 is priced well and this one was no different. Weighing in at around 254g this 🥧 was a decent size in both diameter and depth. In my opinion $7.40 was great value 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Jammed packed and totally full. Zero issues here. 10/10

3. Flavour – 12 hour slow cooked pork shoulder, smokey bbq sauce, onion and smokey bacon, now that’s a serious combination. The flavour was really good and for me the smoky barbecue sauce was not overpowering and didn’t take away from the taste of the beautiful pulled pork. Speaking of pork it was so tender and absolutely melted in your mouth. Great job Warren. 9/10

4. Pastry – Top color was nice and golden, it did have a little burnt patch but that wasn’t anything major. Shape was ok, little bit of pastry shrinkage to top and the stability was excellent. The top bake had great lamination, baked well and the thickness was more than satisfactory. The bottom bake sadly was too thick and underdone, the pics will indicate this. Couple things to work on, but nothing that can’t be fixed overall a very solid pastry. 7/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issues at all. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧

Overall, I really enjoyed this product and it’s one I would easily have again. For me the flavour was the best part. That pulled pork and smoky barbecue sauce hit the spot. Sometimes when you have these types of 🥧’s the sauce can be tangy and can be quite rich, but Warren has done a great job with this one, the sauce blended in beautifully with the meat. The $7.40 price tag in my opinion was spot on, and the 🥧 was completely full. A few things to tweak with the pastry particularly the bottom bake but that’s something I’m sure Warren has got well under control. I’m so glad I chose this particular pie to review and have no hesitation recommending it. Well done team.

This is a cracking bakery and if you’re gonna spend the day exploring the Great Ocean Road, make sure you pop in grab your supplies and check this place out, you won’t be disappointed.

Warren is an absolute legend, I’m so glad I reached out and got the opportunity to meet him. This is your classic family run bakery, where every family member pitches in and does their bit. As mentioned earlier, there was a real funky vibe from the moment you walk in the door and the service here is second to none. What Warren, Prue and team have achieved here since opening is phenomenal. Once again, thanks for having me in. It was a pleasure to meet you guys, stay safe.

This part of Victoria was pretty awesome. Yes, it was cold, but to experience “The Great Ocean Road” was a bucket list for me and it certainly didn’t disappoint. This whole area is one place. I definitely would come back to.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends the page.
