The Flying Pieman – Jacobs Well

The Flying Pieman

Firstly I would like to wish everyone a huge Happy New year and thanks for all your support in 2020. To all the bakers, owners and staff I visited in 2020 i’m so grateful and honored to share all your stories. So 2021 is going to massive and hopefully things can get back to some sort of normality and I can start hitting the road again.
For my first review in 2021 I decided to hit Bruce Hwy, then the M1 before taking a slight detour and eventually landing in the picturesque town of Jacob’s Well. Jacob’s Well is known for its boating and its ideal landing site to launch boats to the Gold Coast broad water and surrounding islands. But I wasn’t here for boating purposes, I was here to see The flying pieman and try his amazing 🥧’s.
Owners Tim and Kellie have had this place for just over 10 years, employing 7 staff. Originally from Cairns, Tim and Kellie have been in the 🥧 game for many many years. I was intrigued by the name “The Flying Pieman” and needed to get to the bottom of this back ground story. As it turns out Tim has a love affair with 🥧’s and planes. This passion then saw him not only making these glorious creations but soon he was flying them into remote areas of Fair North QLD. What a champion !!!!
As soon as I walked in the front door of the bakery the smell was sensational and I started drooling. I immediately new this was going to be EPIC !!!! With so much variety choosing the right 🥧 was going to be difficult. Kellie was throwing suggestion after suggestion and this had me totally confused. Every single 🥧 in the cabinet looks crazy good. In the end Kellie wanted me to try one of her favorites the Chicken, Cheese & Shallot 🥧.
🥧🥧🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧🥧🥧
1. Value for Money – $5.50 was exceptional value for this 🥧. it was huge in size and to be honest this was a very easy score. 10/10
2. Meat Ratio – Check out the photos !!!! The insides was literally spilling out the top. Another easy score. 10/10
3. Meat Flavour – Bloody Awesome !!!!! Filled with huge amounts of chicken, melted cheese and littered with shallots. The sauce was amazing and everything about the flavor was amazing. I’m not a huge fan of the chicken 🥧, but OMG this was good. 10/10
4. Pastry – The top was probably the most fluffiest I’ve ever tasted. While the base was almost perfect. The whole pastry had incredible flavor and despite the incredible weight in this 🥧 it held together beautifully. 9/10
5. Temperature – The temp was perfect. From the first bite to the last bite the temp was spot on. 10/10
🥧🥧 Overall Rating 49/50 🥧🥧
This 🥧 was simply OUTSTANDING !!!! From the price point to the flavor to the temp everything about this 🥧 was so good. The 🥧 was filled with some of the most tender chicken pieces I’ve ever tasted while the pastry was almost perfect. While I was there the crew in the engine room kept feeding me 🥧’s. I tried the Ned Kelly plus the Mushy Pea 🥧 and both were insane.
This bakery is old school !!!! Everything in the joint oozes class and made with love. Absolutely everything served to the public is cooked in house. With no other bakers or apprentices Tim is a dead set legend. The hours he works are tireless and never ending. While Kellie is right beside him running the front of house and getting the staff sorted, but the work doesn’t stop there, when she’s not in the bakery she’s at home doing to the accounts, bookkeeping and ordering stock.
Jacob Well and particularly the Flying Pieman are 100% worth stopping at. The bakery is open 6 days a week and has truck loads of parking. People will say it’s a little bit of a hike off the M1 but the destination is so worth the little bit of extra driving.
As always I need to send out a huge thanks to Tim, Kellie and the girls for having me in. The place was incredibly busy but all the staff took time out to chat and make me feel so welcome. The only negative thing was i did leave with a shocking case of food coma !!!! Every time I looked around someone was shoving food in front of me and it would have been rude to say no LOL !!!
Seriously though Tim and Kellie are true inspirations for all small business owners. The passion they have for there staff and the quality of food they make is infectious. After many years of making glorious 🥧’s this Flying Pieman and his cabin crew are certainly showing no signs of landing.
Hopefully the current COVID situation settles down as Julie and myself are planning a fair bit of travel in 2021. Hitting the road for 3 months mid year plus doing a number of small trips to see and get out to as many bakeries as I possibly can.
