Early Bird Cafe

(Edenhope VIC)

Our overnight stay behind the Border Inn Hotel in Apsley was great. There is plenty of room out the back of the pub for caravans and the meals were fantastic. While I was at the pub the publican gave me a tip on a newly opened cafe at Edenhope. He said the Early Bird Cafe made tremendous handmade 🥧’s and it was only a short drive down the road. That next morning we hooked up the van and got moving.

Edenhope is in Victoria and located 30 kilometres from the South Australian border.

Edenhope is also located in the regional centre of West Wimmera. The lake is the heart of the town, offering year-round opportunities for fishing, boating, lakeside strolls and bird watching.

Speaking of birds the The Early Bird Edenhope Cafe is located smack bang in the main street and has been open since Valentine’s Day this year. Open Monday to Friday owners Cara and Garin are no strangers to the hospitality industry and have been in the food game for many years.

The interior and signage is awesome and I love the bright colors throughout. The cafe menu is simple, highly effective and caters for everybody. The menu has sensational homemade i🥧’s and that’s exactly what I came for. The 🥧 flavours change all the time with Cara and Garin mixing things up most days. On the day of my visit, country chicken, cheese & veges and

potato topped beef 🥧 were the two options available. I decided to review the potato top as it was a little different and it’s been quite some time since I’ve reviewed one.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $8 represented good value for this 🥧 considering my country location and the overall size of this 🥧. It wasn’t massive by all means, but it was still a decent sized product. 7.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – The 🥧was full, but I would have liked to have seen a little more meat and less potato, but overall you would be very happy with the fill quality of this 🥧. 9/10

3. Flavour – Diced pieces of potato, chunky beef with onion and carrot. Then added tomato in the cooking stock to finish it off. The flavour was quite nice and all the ingredients worked well. The beef was super tender and was cooked perfectly. The potato’s were crunchy but in my opinion they needed was a little bit of seasoning on the potato top to give it a little more flavour. Apart from that the team have done a good job with this one 7.5/10

4. Pastry – The color of this pastry will get your attention straight away. The top while not pastry was nice and brown and looked great. The sides and bottom were baked right through and tasted excellent. In my opinion the overall standard of the pastry was of a high quality and tasted great. 8.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here  10/10

Overall Rating

🥧🥧 42.5/50 🥧🥧

Cara and Garin have produced a wonderful product that doesn’t need much tweaking. I was super impressed with the pastry bake and the quality of the potato top bake. The combination of ingredients all blended in well and worked a treat. $8 was well priced and the 🥧 was full. This is not my normal go to flavour, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one and would have no hesitation grabbing another. I also tried the country chicken 🥧 and it was delicious. Great job guys loved both flavours.

This newly opened cafe and the town of Edenhope is 100% worth the slight detour to check out. Plenty of parking is available and it’s such a beautiful scenic drive.

A massive thanks to Cara and Garin for there amazing hospitality and openness to have me come in, take over the joint and review their products. These guys have taken a gamble on this cafe and the town locals and passing tourists need to get behind and support them. I’m so greatful Shane gave me a tip on this place and we popped in. It was a absolute pleasure meeting you both and I wish you all the very best.

As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
