The Bakers Room
(Hervey Bay QLD)
For this weeks review I wanted to keep with the theme of recently opened bakeries, so with that in mind, I hoped in the car and headed up the road to the Hervey Bay suburb of Urangan. When i got there I saw the old Dayman Street corner store has been beautifully converted into a new bakery called The Baker’s Room.
The interior and exterior has been totally transformed and is absolutely stunning. From the cabinets to the state of the art machinery everything in the place is first class. What they have done with this place is simply amazing. Every cabinet was full with every possible item you could ever imagine. The fresh sandwiches and rolls in particular look devine.
Owners Nick and Louise opened this place on the 27th December last year. The bakery employs over 25 staff and is open 7 days a week 7am to 2pm. Nick has been baking for over 40 years and started his apprenticeship way back in 1983 in the Canberra suberb of Phillip. They stayed in the area for many years with Nick and Louise operating Crust Bakery and Sutton Bakery located in and around Canberra.
After getting the tour of this epic new facility, it was time to head to the warmer and select a 🥧 to review. The selection on offer here is more than generous with over 14 different varieties to choose from. For this weeks review, I went with the “Lamb Rosemary Shiraz” a few of the locals out the front said this one was a cracker so for this weeks review that’s what I went with.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8.20 is defiantly creeping up there in price, but not over the top. The 🥧 was a standard size oval shape with a decent depth to it. Lamb is also pricey at the moment so that needs to be taken into account. Overall pretty good value. 8.5/10
2. Meat Ratio – No issues here !!! This 🥧 was full and totally choc a block with huge chunks of lamb. Great job. 10/10
3. Flavour – Slow cooked lamb, rosemary, various spices and then bathed in a shiraz wine gravy. The meat was extremely tender and was cooked beautifully. The shiraz was also the perfect blend and wasn’t overpowering at all. Really good job guys, the flavour was sensational. 9/10
4. Pastry – The color, shape and shrinkage on this 🥧 was really impressive. The bake thicknesses was also perfect, with the side bakes being a smidge thick. The bottom bake was excellent, while one side and top bake was slightly underbaked as photos indicate. The pastry had a really good flakey taste to it which made this pastry. Overall a couple of little things to work on, but nothing major. Great job guys. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect temp 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46/50 🥧🥧
This was an outstanding product. The scores were very consistent right across the board. The positives are too long to write, but I loved the flavor in particular. The shiraz was the exact amount and really made this 🥧 what it was. Only real negatives was the side and top bake, but these can be fixed quite easily. The team have done a sterling job with this one. Loved it !!!
Hervey Bay’s newest 🥧 joint is a beauty and here to stay. 100% add this place to your own list you won’t be disappointed. As mentioned earlier what they have done to this old corner store is mind blowing and that’s worth the visit alone.
Once again a huge thanks to Nick and Louise. This was a cold call visit and they weren’t expecting me, but they still took time out of their busy schedule to show me around and share there 🥧 journey with me. Thanks heaps guys i will be back.
