Terang Country Bakery

My Port Fairy stay had come to a end and it was time to hit the road and start making my way towards the Geelong and Torquay area. Along the way I scheduled an overnight stay in the Victorian country town of Terang. Terang is one of the oldest rural towns in Victoria. The town is located 212 kilometres from Melbourne. The town a has a very successful bakery, and that was the big reason for my visit.
The Terang Country Bakery is located in the main street and is owned and operated by Brad Burkitt. Brad has been in the baking industry for over 17 years and opened this place just on 8 years ago. The building itself is quite stunning and is over 110 years old. Opened in 1915 it was the first architectly designed building by a female in Australia, now that’s pretty cool.
Inside the bakery is huge and the layout is fantasic. Open 6 days a week and employing 18 staff there is plenty of seating inside and the cabinets are totally full with every baking product imaginable. There’s also big table in the center of the bakery that is totally full with daily specials and other sweet treats. The production area is also very impressive with all the latest equipment and a spotless clean work area. After meeting all the team and getting a guided tour of this impressive building it was time to check out the 🥧’s.
There’s a terrific selection of 🥧’s on offer here and choosing one to review was going to be difficult. After looking at the menu I still couldn’t decide, then I saw the 🥧 of the month “Bangers and Mash” I’ve never reviewed one of these flavours before and I was keen to give this one a go.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8.50 is certainly up there, but in its defence the 🥧 weighed in at a healthy 284 grams which is well above the industry standard. It was also a decent sized oval shape and totally full. 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full. Easy score to adjudicate 10/10
3. Flavour – I absolutely loved the flavour in this 🥧. I’m not a massive potato 🥧 fan, but this one was really impressive. The snags tasted sensational, the rich dark gravy sauce was beautiful and the thin golden layer of potato worked a treat. What impressed me was the potato layer was just enough and played a sensational supporting role to the snags. I’ve seen a lot of potato 🥧’s and normally the potato makes up 2/3 of the actual 🥧, where in this case it was just enough and the potato was cooked perfectly. Great work team I loved this flavour. 10/10
4. Pastry – The top color got me straight away and it looked super impressive. The shape was also on point and the stability was excellent. The only real negative was the bottom bake was ever so slightly underdone and needed a smidge more time in the oven. Apart from that the pastry tasted excellent, and the overall standard was very good 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issues at all. 10/10

This was a super product and one I actually really enjoyed. It’s not my normal go to, but it hit the spot and to be fair it wasn’t far away from being perfect. Brad and his team have created in my opinion a fantasic “Bangers & Mash 🥧” Also what ive been told it’s now a permanent fixture on the menu. The flavour and particularly the rich dark gravy sauce was absolutely beautiful. Overall sensational job guys, I could’ve easily smashed two of these bas boys, highly recommended.
100% add this classic bakery and the small town of Terang to your travel plans. This is a great little town one that’s well worth exploring, and the bakery won’t disappoint.
I’ve known Brad for a little while now and it was awesome to finally get to his bakery and try his epic products. Brad has built a sensational business based on hard work and he’s given back a lot of his time to this industry. The awards and competitions Brad has entered and won is endless and now he’s passing this knowledge and skill onto his wonderful staff. Thanks for having me in mate and i wish you all the best.
My overnight stay in Terang was sensational. The Terang Community Caravan Park while only small was a clean, tidy, walking distance to town and 100% worth the stay, highly recommended.
