Taylor’s Bakehouse
(Sorell TAS)

Feb 2025

The express 2024 Tassie Tour continued to roll on. After leaving Stanley, I headed back down the centre of Tassie spending a couple of nights near Deloraine and Mole Creek. After that I punched through to New Norfolk to catch up with the legends at the Quilted Tea Pot. I was there back in 2022 and as always it was great to catch up with old friends.

After leaving the Quilted Tea Pot I made my way down to the small town of Sorell. I was popping in to see a legend named Shane. I first met Shane back in 2022 when he was at the Richmond Bakery. Since then he has opened up is own bakery named Taylor’s Bakehouse .

Taylor’s Bakehouse is located in the Gateway Shopping Centre at Sorell. The bakery itself has been up and running for over 20 years, but Shane only took over this place about 2 years ago. Shane’s been in the industry for 20 years, working in bakeries all over Tassie. So when he reached out, I jumped at the chance to go and see him again and check out his new bakery.

The bakery employs 9 plus staff, with Shane the only baker. I’ve gotta take my hat off to this legend, being the only the baker here is extremely tough, particularly when the place is open seven days a week. All the products that are on display look phenomenal and it’s a real credit to Shane and his staff. Unfortunately the day of my visit, Shane was extremely busy so we didn’t have much time to chat, so we decided to get some 🥧’s out and get cracking.

Shane has a good spread of 🥧’s available on the menu here. His curried scallop was really nice, but an older gentlemen out the front of the shopping centre gave me the tip to try the “Steak, Bacon, and Cheese”. I’ve said this many, many times before, if the locals give you a tip you generally stick to it and that’s what I did.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.50 price tag was extremely good value for a (SBC) 🥧. There were no issues with the depth and diameter and to be fair Shane’s 🥧 tins are quite deep which is always great to hear. Zero issues with this price and the score would have been higher if that air pocket didn’t exist. 8.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Apart from the big air pocket in the middle of this 🥧, it was pretty full. I did cut a few other 🥧’s that day and they all had the same. This could have just been a once off, but I’d say this 🥧 was about 85% full. 8/10

3. Flavour – The overall flavour and texture in this 🥧 was really nice. The meat was beautiful. The bacon tasted fantastic and there was just enough cheese to give it that extra flavour. The only negative was the gravy was slightly higher to meet ratio, but this was only minimal. In saying that the gravy sauce was dark and tasted terrific. 8/10

4. Pastry – The colour of Shane‘s pies are phenomenal and immediately caught my attention. The shape and shrinkage were both ok (little bit of shrinkage). While the gravy sauce may have looked a little runny, the stability of this 🥧was excellent. The bakes and bake thicknesses were almost spot on and Shane has done a great job with this. The only negative was the top pastry falling down. The pastry flavour was excellent as well, golden and flaky to the last bite. Overall, not a lot wrong with this pastry just a few minor tweaks here and there. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – This was the perfect serving temp !!! 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 42.5/50 🥧🥧

To be honest, there wasn’t much wrong with this product. The scores were all very consistent across five categories with only a few minor tweeks needed here and there. I really enjoyed the flavour and the pastry of this 🥧, particularly the golden flaky pastry. The price tag of $6.50 wouldn’t scare anyone away, as I think it’s extremely well priced. I’ve also gotta give the scallop pie a mentioned. It was totally full with fresh scallops and tasted fantastic, great job Shane.

Taylor’s Bakehouse is another bakery you need to add to the list of bakeries while visiting Tasmania. There is plenty of on-site parking and plenty of seating inside. 100% must visit.

Shane a massive thanks mate for reaching out and inviting me to this epic little joint. Being the only baker with two young kids is a massive job, but he rolls up his sleeves every day and gets the job done. Shane you’ve done exceptionally well mate in your new place. I’m so happy for you and wish you all the very best.
