Tatura Hot Bread Bakery
(Tatura VIC)

The mini Victorian tour rolled on and the next destination on the agenda was the little town of Tatura. Tatura is located 18km from Shepparton and is often known as water wheel country. I had two places I wanted to visit whilst I was in town. The first one was the Hilltop Golf and Country Club and the second place was the Tatura Hot Bread Bakery.

The bakery has been around for a long time with previous owner George Wells, retiring and selling the Bakery last July. Unfortunately the day of my visit I wasn’t able to meet the new owners Sue, but I was greeted by head baker Andrew. Andrew started his apprenticeship at age 16 in Shepparton and has been at this bakery for over three years.

The bakery itself is located in the main street and it open six days. It’s a real old school bakery with every food item on offer. Also, there is plenty of seating inside to sit and relax. As I had a tee time to get to I had to get this review underway and tuck into a few 🥧’s.

There’s a great selection of 🥧’s on offer, but one got my attention immediately and that was a chicken parmi 🥧. That’s right the classic Aussie pub meal, jampacked into a 🥧. I’ve had plenty of chicken 🥧’s , but a parmi pie was a first for me and I was super excited.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.50 represented excellent value for a 🥧 that would be considered in the gourmet category. It was a decent size in weight and diameter and I couldn’t fault the price. 10/10

2. Meat & Fill Ratio – Another 🥧 and another totally full 🥧. Great job 10/10

3. Flavour – The actual flavor was really good and tasted just like a real chicken parmi. Chicken breast, tomato, Parmesan cheese and mixture of white sauce and Napoleon red sauce. This was a really different flavor and one I’ve never had before. Love it !! Great job Andrew 9/10

4. Pastry – A little difficult to score as there was no top bake, but the shape, colour and stability of the bottom bake were all terrific. The side, bakes and bottom bakes were underdone and clearly evident through the wet lines in the photos and the bottom bake was a smidge too thick. The pastry flavor was really nice and couldn’t be faulted. 6.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – the top part was hot and that could’ve been from the tomato. Overall nothing to worry about only had to wait about a minute or two before tucking in. 8.5/10

                  Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧

This particular flavoured 🥧 wouldn’t normally be on my hit list or one I would try regularly, but I really enjoyed this one. The flavor for me was the clear standout. The chicken pieces were huge and it tasted like a real parmi. $6.50 was terrific value and the 🥧 was completely full. Only real negatives were the bottom bake which was underdone and too thick. Both these points can easily be fixed or tweaked. Overall this was a really nice 🥧 and one I would have no hesitation recommending to any parmi loving 🥧 eater out there. 100% add this old school bakery to your 🥧 plans, you won’t be disappointed.

Big thanks to Andrew and the staff for having me. Andrew is a bloody legend, came in and met me on his day off. This was very much an impromptu visit and all the crew were amazing. It was a pity I didn’t get to meet Sue but the timing didn’t quite match. This is a terrific area to visit and a place I certainly will come back to.

A massive shout out to the men and women at the Hill Top Golf and Country Club for there incredible hospitality. This was a cracking spot to camp and if your golf tragic like I am, it’s a must stop. The golf course is tight, challenging and the beer at the 19th is ice cold. Booking details on Wiki.
