A few months ago before the weather turned brass monkey like, i went down to the Tumit/Talbingo area to explore the Yarrangoilly caves the thermal pools. The small township of Talbingo was the last place I’d expect to find a anything that resembled a 🥧. The town itself is located in the snowy mountain region of New South Wales and this is where I stumbled across the The Snowy Store – Talbingo Supermarket. As soon as I pulled up in the car park, I saw a banner saying hamburger, coffee, and pies.
Inside I met owners Kylie & Kevin. This place acts as a supermarket liqueur store but best of all sells homemade pies. Kylie has never baked a 🥧 in her life, but thought the community and passing travelers could benifit from having these necessary 🇦🇺 food staple available.
Kylie was pretty nervous and made it very clear to me that she wasn’t a baker by any means and just loves cooking and baking. On the day of my visit, I was lucky enough that Kylie had made a fresh batch and ready for consumption. As this township is quite small and seasonable, Kylie only makes a small batch of her creations each day so be quick as they sell fast.
The selection of 🥧’s on offer here is quite small as as you could possibly imagine. One of the flavors that caught my eye was Kylie‘s curry, beef and mixed vegetables. It’s been a while since I reviewed a 🥧 with a combination of ingredients like this one.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – I’m not going to lie $12 is very much up there for any sort of 🥧. This particular 🥧 was absolutely massive in diameter and depth and was the weight of a house brick. The ingredients in this 🥧 would not be considered as gourmet, therefore in my opinion $12 is certainly there in price, but you need to consider where you are as well. 6/10
2. Meat Ratio – This beast was absolutely full to the brim with zero room left at all. 10/10
3. Flavour – Mince, curry spice, potato’s and assorted mixed vegetables. The 🥧 itself had a really nice flavour to it. The meat was cooked right through and the mixed vegetables were super crunchy. Sadly the 🥧 lacked texture and was a little dry and needed more gravy. 5/10
4. Pastry – With a 🥧 of the size it was always gonna be difficult to keep everything intact. This pie was seriously heavy, so stability was challenging at timesb but still held together. The top bake had a nice gold color to it, although it did have a few cracks starting to appear. The bottom pastry, although cooked right through was greasy and moist. This was probably a result of the aluminum tin the 🥧 was sitting in. Overall a real mixed bag with this one. but still acceptable, particularly given the fact that Kylie has no baking experience. 6/10
5. Serving Temperature – This bugger was a little hot for my liking, but nothing over the top or anything to get concerned about 8/10

For a woman that’s not a baker kylie has done a great job with his product. Although a little dry the flavor of this 🥧 was good and the curry mix was clearly evident. The 🥧 needed a little bit more gravy mix to smooth out the texture. While $12 is on the expensive side, this was an enormous 🥧 that was totally full and weighed a tonne. Its great to see many small businesses like Kylie’s making 🥧’s and diversifing.
Overall I enjoyed this 🥧 and would have no hesitation having another one. If you need to stock up on last-minute supplies, simply forgotten something or craving a 🥧 the Talbingo General store will get you sorted. If your heading up to this way don’t forget to pop in and say gday.
A massive thanks to Kylie and Kevin for their hospitality. As mentioned, Kylie is not a baker and having your products reviewed by any food critic would be daunting, especially when baking 🥧’s Isn’t your core business. I really applaud Kylie for rolling his leaves up having a crack.
100% add this area to your travel plans. There is so much to see and do here, plus there is an abundance of low cost camping options. The caves were incredible while the thermal pool was nice the water temperature was a little chillly.
