After smashing a few 🥧’s at the Double Duck it was time to jump in the car and head to my next review. I was on my way to
Sutcliffe Meats Glendale in the Newcastle suberb of Glendale. Known for their incredible cabinet display that is filled full of fine meat and poultry, I also heard this joint does a wicked selection of homemade brisket 🥧’s. After doing my own research and a making few calls i knew this visit was going to be a belter.
The butcher shop is located just as you walk into the main entrance to the Glendale City Centre. Owner Nic has had the shop for 5 years. From the moment you walk in, you greeted by a fabulous cabinet display that’s choc a block full with a great selection of steak, snags, chops and every product imaginable.
A few years ago Nic started dabbling in “smoke bbq” and this passion now sees him having his own barbecue team that competes in major events but more importantly the introduction of 🥧’s into his business
As you would expect for a butcher shop the variety isn’t huge but once again highly effective. Brisket is the main ingredient in all of the 🥧’s on offer and one 🥧 in particular had caught my eye. It was Nic’s award winning “cheese burger” 🥧. I’ve heard legendary things about this 🥧 and I was bursting at the seams to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $9 may seem high to a few, but once you bite into this thing you will see how jammed back full of brisket it is. The 🥧 was weighed and came in at around 260g which is great value. It was also a decent size in depth and diameter. Overall I have zero issues at $9 and personally think it’s fantastic value 9/10.
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – This thing was FULL and pics will back this up. 10/10
3. Flavour – The BEST !!! The flavour was incredible. The brisket was cooked perfectly, and once again the natural juices gave this 🥧 the extra flavour. As it should the, cheese, pickles, mustard, ketchup and onion all played minor rolls, but each played equally important in giving this 🥧 that devine flavour it had. This was such a easy score to adjudicate. 10/10
4. Pastry – The pastry wasn’t far away from being perfect. The pastry tasted fantastic and had very limited shrinkage and the stability was perfect. The top bake thinkness and bake was also perfect. Only negative was there were very small wet lines down both sides of the 🥧, which can be seen in the pics. Overall extremely good pastry to go with the wicked flavour. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

I’m going to say this was the best cheeseburger 🥧 I have ever sampled and in my opinion it was close to the perfect 🥧. The flavour in this beast will rock your socks off and have you begging for more. All the ingredients combined perfectly and the flavour couldn’t be faulted. Once again in my opinion nine dollars was fantastic value and a top it off, it was completely full. The pastry was excellent with only a few minor points to work on they could’ve easily been a once off errors. Nic you’ve absolutely nailed this buddy and this 🥧 was so worthy of the gold medal it won at the 2023 Great Aussie 🥧 comp.
This is one place you need to get to if your a genuine 🥧 lover. This visit will serve two purposes, one you get to try the epic 🥧’s and secondly grab yourself a bargain with some of the best meat and poultry in the area.
