Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Stroud Butchery
(Stroud NSW)
May, 2026
A couple of weeks ago I took the Y62 up to Gloucester to get the new draws and battery system put in the car. On my way up i drove through the small town of Stroud and noticed this little town had a butcher shop. After dropping the car off at Drifta I made a quick stop into that butcher shop at Stroud. The first thing I noticed was the “homemade” 🥧’s staring at me from the cabinets. I grabbed some meat introduced myself and made a time to come back later in the week and do a review.
Stroud is a small NSW country town one hour north of Newcastle. It’s heritage-rich town famous as Australia’s oldest surviving “company town”. Founded in 1826 by the Australian Agricultural Company (AACo), it is celebrated for its well-preserved colonial architecture, convict-built underground silos on Silo Hill, and its quirky annual Stroud Brick and Rolling Pin Throwing Competition.
Stroud Butchery is located right in the centre of town and is owned and operated by local legends Mick and Tash. This powerhouse couple bought the business one week after lockdown took place back in 2020 and at that time the world was in chaos and potentially looked very bleak. 6 years later they have taken this business to the next level, now employing 7 staff that includes two apprentices. Matt their 2nd year apprentice recently won the 2026 “Meat Stock Butcher Wars” apprentice of the year !! What a champion effort.
The selection of meat here is super impressive and the cabinet display cannot be faulted. The meat was awesome, but I came back for these epic 🥧’s and I couldn’t wait to get started.
Mick and his team have created a cracking variarty of flavours to choose from. The list includes cheese ‘n’ bacon, Lamb mint and rosemary, Sunday roast plus many others. There was one flavour that caught my eye and that was Mick’s famous “ steak, cheese and jalapeño” this is one of their best sellers and gee wizz it looked good.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $9.50 is tremendous value, considering it weighed a whopping 400 grams. This was a huge 🥧 and navigating a way to eat this ad boy was going to be tricky. 10/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – It was so full it was bursting out the top. Nothing more to say but excellent fill ratio 10/10
3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 was super impressive. 14 hour slow cooked beef, cheese, and jalapeño. The meat was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. What I did like was the cheese and jalapeño ratios combine beautifully. The jalapeños while clearly evident wasn’t hot enough to scare you away. The dark gravy sauce gave this 🥧 some added flavour Overall the team has done a wonderful job with this one. 9/10
4. Pastry – The most impressive part of this pastry was the structure and stability. As mentioned earlier, this was a heavy 🥧 and went tipped upside down it didn’t move a bit. The color and shape were also on point and were the bakes. The pastry tasted great as well which was a real bonus 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧
Mick and his team have done a sterling job with this 🥧. In fact all the 🥧’s i sampled that day (there was a few 😂) were all fantasic. The size of these things will get your attention straight away and if you’re not impressed by the size, you’re gonna be blown away by the flavour. The slow cooked beef was beautiful and couldn’t be faulted. This was an impressive 🥧 and one I would have again in a heart beat. Great job team well done.
This was a cracking butcher shop and a must visit. The steak and sausages i had later that night was also phenomenal. It’s so great to see more butcher shops making and selling 🥧’s and you won’t be disappointed with these one.
To Mick & Tash thank you so much for getting back to me and allowing me to share you 🥧 journey. The blood, sweat and tears you have put into this place is massive and you deserve every success that comes your way. Your cabinet display is stunning and the service is second to none. Your also creating employment opportunities for the next generation of butchers. This was a cracking and un-expected review and I cannot wait to get back to Stroud and smash more of your amazing 🥧’s.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
