Last Monday I had the privilege of being interviewed by Ben Fordham from 2GB in the Sydney studios, immediately after that interview, I jumped in the car and made my way out to Hunters Hill to meet Melina from Stoneground Bakery. I did visit this place a few months ago and actually smashed a couple of their 🥧’s but sadly didn’t get the opportunity to do a review. So with that in mind I was keen to spend some time at the epic bakery.
Owner Melina opened this bakery 11 years ago and built it up from scratch and gee wizz the place looks incredible. Melina has been around the baking industry for a while but has no formal qualifications. This superstar was actually a qualified hairdresser and eventually traded the scissors for oven mits.
The bakery itself is located near the corner on Gladsville Road in Hunters Hill. The place is open 7 days a week and now employs over 20 staff. The first thing you’ll notice when entering is the stunning interior which includes a wicked cabinet display. The cabinets are full with the most beautiful products imaginable my mouth was dead set drooling and I hadn’t even got to the 🥧 warner yet.
My eyes led me down to the highly impressive 🥧 warmer. This thing was totally full with a sensational range of pastry delights including glorious 🥧’s. Melina’s team have come up with a epic range of flavours that sure pack a punch. After chatting to one of Melina’s chefs I decided to test run the “Beef Rendang 🥧” I absolutely love these of type of flavours and was super excited to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $9.20 was actually tremendous value given the depth, diameter and weight of this 🥧. It did feel heavy and it was weighing in at 295 grams. Overall not much more to say, but an excellent valued 🥧 9.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – About 95% full. There was a small air pocket in the top of the pastry, apart from that it was very full 9.5/10
3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 was fantastic. The 🥧 consisted of slow cooked mince and very healthy meat chunks that were cooked to beautifully and melted in your mouth. The house made rendang curry was spectacular. It was actually the perfect texture and taste and was on the mild side of hotness. It’s the sort of curry mix that won’t scare you off and will appeal to most curry lovers. Only negative and this is quite small, the curry sauce could have been a little thicker, but this is probably really nitpicking. 9/10
4. Pastry – The unique shape and crimped pastry was excellent and had a really nice flavour to it. Everything about it was very good, particularly the bakes which were spot on. The only negative and once again this this was small was the bottom bake was a smidge greasy. Being a generous 295g 🥧 you just had to be a little strategic on how you attacked this beast. Overall the quality of this pastry was near perfect, great job. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issues at all. 10/10

As the scoring categories clearly show this was a very consistent and near perfect 🥧. A few minor blemishes here and there but apart from that this was a stunning product. The flavour was outstanding and didn’t bite which will suit most curry lovers. The price tag of $9.20 is excellent value, and the unique shape of this 🥧 makes the value even better. Melina’s team have done a wonderful job with this product and it’s going to be a great seller. Well done team awesome product and it’s one I have no hesitation recommending.
100% add this hidden gem to your little black book of 🥧’s. Everything about this bakery oozes class and trust me your going to love this place.
A massive thanks to Melina for having me in and also supplying the 🥧’s for the 2GB radio interview. Melina is one cracking operator who runs a unbelievable show. Although only small in size this is busy bakery that takes a lot of moving parts to run and Melina seems to do it with ease. I wish you all the best in the future and next time I’m gunna pop in for a 🥧 and a haircut.
