The next review on this current 🥧 tour was Southlands Butchery Moruya NSW. This place was tipped to me by a 🥧 punter as I was checking into the caravan park. I love getting tips and recommendations from fellow 🥧 lovers, so with that in mind, I jumped in the car and paid the team a visit.
Southlands Butchery is located at 93 Campbell Street, Moruya and is owned and operated by Robert Kidd, wife Haleigh, and Xavier Ryan. The selection of meat, poultry and other items was sensational. I picked up some flavoured snags and rump steak which was amazing. The rump was up there with the best I’ve had.
The shop has also diversified into 🥧’s. This was an idea from the previous owner and that baton has now been handed over to the new 🥧 boss Haleigh. With ZERO baking skills whatsoever, Haleigh has self taught herself and as a result the locals and passing tourists are flocking from everywhere to try her magicial creations. These 🥧’s are so popular they sell out fast, so make sure you get in early.
For a small butcher shop Haleigh has created a awesome little 🥧 menu that will cater for everyone. I did try the unuasul combination of “chicken, cheese and asparagus” and to my surprise that combination of ingredients work a treat. For the purpose of this review, I wanted to try one of their best sellers that was the “chunky beef and red wine”
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.20 in my opinion is great value. The 🥧 was a decent size in both weight and diameter and you know the meat inside this bad boy is of the highest quality. Great value for money. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – As pics will show this 🥧 was completely full. 10/10
3 Flavour – Haleigh has done a sterling job with the overall flavour of this 🥧. The 🥧 was filled with a combination of chunky steak and mince that was cooked to perfection. The added garlic was the right amount, and you could taste this throughout the 🥧. The red wine flavour was also evident, but I would have liked to have tasted a smidge more, but this could be a personal choice. All in all a wonderful flavoued 🥧. 8/10
4. Pastry – The overall pastry wasn’t too bad at all. A few things to work on, but nothing major. The color was great and top had no shrinkage which was fantastic. The stability was excellent as well and the 🥧 held firm right till the last bite. The top bake thickness was spot on but a smidge underbaked (only a fraction) The bottom bake was baked through, but was too thick. The pastry did taste really good which I enjoyed. 7/10
5. Serving Temperature – No issues, fantasic serving temperature. 10/10

Haleigh has done a great job with this 🥧 in fact all the🥧’s I sampled were top notch. All the scores were very consistent across all 5 categories. $7.20 in my opinion is very good value for money and the 🥧 was completely full !!! The flavour was excellent, that meat was so tender and the added garlic gave it the little bit of extra flavour. The pastry was also there about’s, with only a few small things to work on. Overall I loved this 🥧 and would have no hesitation having another one. Great job Haleigh your a superstar.
If your passing through or staying in Moruya make sure you pop into this place. If you think the 🥧’s are good you should try the meat. The selection and service is second to none and there’s heaps of parking out the front. Highly recommended.
A huge thank to the team at Southlands Butchery for having me in and Haleigh for allowing me to share this 🥧 journey. I’ve said it many times before, it would be very daunting to have someone just rock up to your business and review your products. The community of Moruya and passing tourists are extremely lucky to have someone like Haleigh make the quality products she does. I’m so greatful that dude gave me the tip on this joint and I paid the team a visit. Stay safe guys see you next visit.
