Sandi’s Hotbake Bakery
Cooma NSW
October, 2026
A few weeks ago I was driving through the southern NSW town of Cooma when a fellow 🥧 punter saw my car and caravan. He sent me a message to say his brother-in-law operates the Sandi’s Hot Bake Bakery in town and the next time I was free pop in and do a review. I made a few calls, locked a date in my diary and teed up the visit.
Sandi’s Hot Bake Bakery, located on Bombala Street in Cooma, is proudly owned and operated by two ripping brothers, Lucky and Tran. The bakery has a long-standing family history, with their parents, Ly and Dung, taking over the business more than 25 years ago.
Sadly the boys mum (Dung) passed away from cancer mid last year and the brothers put there careers (real estate and finance)on temporary hold and returned to Cooma to help the family run the bakery. Since returning they have made some massive changes to the bakeries interior and have kept this family bakery running. Since Dung’s passing the local Cooma community has been phenomenal and their support the boys have received is absolutely amazing.
The bakery itself has everything you need plus more and the selection of products available is very good. After getting the tour and meeting the staff it was time to get this party started and choose a 🥧 to review.
Another traditional bakery with a great traditional menu. About 8 flavours to choose from and all of them looked very appealing. My choice was simple I wanted to try the “Plain 🥧” as it’s been so long since I’ve reviewed this particular flavour and so many locals told me this was a must try.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8 may seem high to a few, but after visiting 200 plus bakeries already this year the $7 to $8 range is quite normal these days considering the cost of quality ingredients and transport. It wasn’t a massive 🥧 by anyone’s standards, but still was a decent size in depth and diameter. Good value 🥧 7.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Really full and a great mix of mince and gravy. Zero complaints here 10/10
3. Flavour – For a plain meat 🥧 the flavour was great. The mince was cooked beautifully and the amount of gravy was perfect. It has a sweet sort of flavour to it, which really stood out and gave it some added punch. Lucky and Kong told me it was a secret family ingredient, whatever it was, it gave this 🥧 really good flavor. Thoroughly enjoyed great work, lads 9/10
4. Pastry – A few things to work on, but overall the pastry was really good and had a really nice texture to it. The color, shape and stability were all excellent and there was limited shrinkage on top. Both bake thicknesses were on point which was great to see. Both bakes were slightly underdone and as always this is a easy fix. 7.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!! 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧
The team has put together a really good product and one I’d have again in a heartbeat. As mentioned it’s been a while since I’ve had a plain meat 🥧 and this one didn’t disappoint. The five scoring categories were all very consistent, but it was the flavour for me that stood out. Whatever that secret ingredient was, made a real difference and it tasted great. The pastry was also pretty good and overall not much to work on only a few tweaks. Great work Tyson your products are highly recommended and 🥧 lovers this is one bakery you wanna add to your list.
I did manage to try the “Pepper 🥧” and OMG this thing had some serious kick. If you like your pepper 🥧’s 🔥, this one will be right up your alley. Also highly recommended.
To Lucky and Kong thank you so much for inviting me down and allowing me to share your families 🥧 journey. The way your family and the Cooma community has banded together since your mums passing is incredible. Both of you put your lives in careers on hold to help out the family and ensure this town had a operating bakery and that’s really special. The work you have done in this place is amazing and you two lads should be extremely proud of what you’ve done. Keep up the good work guys and you will 100% see me again.
Cooma and the surrounding areas are well worth the visit. There is so much to see, do and explore. From Cooma itself to the nearby ski fields and national parks you won’t get bored. If your planning a winter escape bring a jumper, gee wizz this joint can get cold.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
