2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 41
Rutherford Bakehouse
(Rutherford NSW)
May 2025
After leaving M & M Bakehouse in a complete food coma, I had to roll up my sleeves and truck on as I still had one more visit to do to finish my day. Lucky for me, my next review was literally 100m around the corner at Rutherford Bakehouse. It was there where I met owner Jack. Unfortunately, his wife Annie wasn’t available, but Jack was eager to show me around.
Rutherford Bakehouse is located in Shop 24 E Mall in Rutherford. This is another remarkable story where the owners had no baking experience whatsoever when starting out. In 2012 Jack and his family moved out from Vietnam and upon arrival soon found himself helping his uncle in his bakery in Sydney. Not long after that Jack and Annie took the punt and open up their own place.
Jack and Annie have done a wonderful job here. The cabinets are totally full with a huge selection of sensational products. What would a Vietnamese bakery be without Banh Mi’s and the Banh Mi’s here were off the charts. Unfortunately time wasnt on our side and Jack’s a busy man, so we had to get started, so I made my way over to the 🥧 warmer.
There’s a terrific selection of 🥧’s om the menu here, nothing fancy just good old fashion favourites. After looking at the menu It didn’t take me long to make a decision. As soon as I saw “Chunky Steak” on the board I was sold. It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed one these particular flavoured 🥧’s and I couldn’t wait to get started.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.50 was great value. The 🥧weighed in at around 265 grams and was a decent size in depth and diameter. In my opinion, you wouldn’t have any complaints paying $6.50 for this particular 🥧. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – To be honest the pictures don’t do this 🥧 justice. If you digged around you would have found a decent amount of chunky meat in this 🥧. Pretty good value. 8.5/10
3. Flavour – The flavour was really good. The meat chucks was fairly decent and extremely tender. The dark gravy sauce was beautiful, with the only real negative being the gravy to sauce ratio was a little too much in favour of the gravy. Apart from that the overall flavour of this 🥧 was terrific. 8/10
4. Pastry – In my opinion, the pastry was the best part of this 🥧. The color of these 🥧’s will get you hooked straight away. It was golden from top to bottom. Even though the gravy sauce looked runny the stability of this 🥧 held firm right to the end. Both bakes wern’t far away and the thicknesses were near spot on as well. Jack and his team have done a great job with this one. 9.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧
This product proved to be an outstanding choice, one that I thoroughly appreciated. The consistency across the five scoring categories was impressive, with the pastry being the highlight in my view. The price of $6.50 represented great value, and the flavour was beautiful. While there was a slight overabundance of gravy sauce, it must be noted that the sauce itself was of exceptional quality. All in all, I am extremely pleased with my decision to choose this 🥧, and I would readily opt for it again. Great job, Jack and his team. This is your classic old school bakery and it’s one that you need to add to your ever-growing list.
Jack and Annie are absolute superstars, and I cannot thank them enough for their hospitality and time. As mentioned earlier, Jack was flat stick on the day of my visit, but still took the time out to show me around the bakery. All the best guys, your doing a fantastic job.
A massive thanks to everyone in the Hunter Valley region for their incredible hospitality. This is an amazing place and one that I’ll get back to you very shortly. I would like to thank all the business owners that I visited on this trip. Without your help, support and generosity of your time, I couldn’t do what I do.
