Red Hill Butcher Shop
(Red Hill ACT)

The search for Canberra’s best 🥧 was nearing the finishing line, with only a few more places to visit. I’m sure I’ve missed a few hidden spots here and there, but I will be sure to visit them up later in the year. This next visit was something a little different. I was heading up to the RedHill Butcher Shop shop in the Canberra suburb of Red Hill.

You might ask “what’s so different about this butcher shop ?” Well it makes and sells its own 🥧’s, but this place is also a fully licensed. Yes that’s correct you came pop into this place and grab yourself a trifecta “Meat, Pies and Booze” I’m sure that there is other butcher shops out there that are licensed, but this was a first for me.

Upon arrival I was greeted by owner Tony and his wife Rosie. Tony has been in the baking game for a very long time, and introduced 🥧’s to its menu back in 2???. Shortly after the 🥧’s were introduced Tony come up with the genius decision to get the shop licensed. These days the place not only stocks the best locally sourced meat it also sells local wine, gin and craft beer. The shop has recently recieved a cracking make over and if you haven’t been here for a while you wouldn’t recognize the place.

Tony and Rosie only introduced 🥧’s to the butcher shop when the cafe in their shopping complex closed it’s doors, leaving a 🥧 gap that needed to be filled for the hungry locals in the area. For a butcher shop the selection of 🥧’s on the menu here is quite generous, with all the usuals on the board, plus a couple of exotics as well. For this weeks review I went with my absolute favourite flavour and that’s a “Chunky Steak and Pepper”

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $7.50 represented reasonable value, while the 🥧 wasn’t that deep it was a decent oval shaped 🥧 that was completely full. 7/10

2. Meat Ratio – Full !!!! No more room left at all !! 10/10

3. Flavour – Really Good !!! Huge chunks of slow cooked chuck steak, hickory pepper and mixed with a dark gravy. The meat was beautifuly cooked while the hickory pepper was the perfect mix. Great job on this one, love it 9/10

4. Pastry – A few things to work on, but you need to take into account these guys are butchers not bakers. The color, shape, shrinkage and stability were all acceptable. There were signs the meat had spilled out the top, while the bottom bake and thickness needed work. On a positive note the top bake was perfect and the pastry flavour was super impressive. 6.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp.

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 42.5/50 🥧🥧

For a mob of butchers these legends make a wicked 🥧. I really enjoyed this 🥧 and all the 🥧’s I sampled during my visit. The flavor for me was the clear standout. The meat was stunning and I particularly liked the dark gravy sauce. Yeah the pasty had a few issues here and there, but I loved the fact the team are making their own 🥧’s and not buying in the pastry, they are having a serious crack. I have zero hesitation recommending this place to any 🥧 enthusiast. Great work Tony, Rosie and team awesome stuff.

A massive thanks to Tony and Rosie for having me in. I loved this review and the people behind it. The crew saw a need to provide the community with 🥧’s and they have delivered this in spades. This is a epic little butcher shop that stocks everything you could ask for and more. Add this cracking joint to your 🥧 travels guys you won’t be disappointed.

Its awesome to see more and more butcher shops making and selling 🥧’s. It’s extremely important we continue to support our local butcher shops where we can. These shops provide a vital service to little towns, suberbs and small communities. Yes, they might be a smidge dearer than Wollies and Coles but in my opinion the quality is better and the service is second to none.
