Port Elliot Bakery – Port Elliot SA

Port Elliot Bakery

I didn’t have to travel far for this weeks review only about 1km up the road from the caravan park where we were staying. Port Elliot Bakery Bakery was a place I’ve had on my list for some time and now I was finally there I was a tad excited to say the least. The bakery is located right in the main area of town on North Terrence.

Port Elliot Bakery was opened way back 1860 which is insane. During the last 163 years this bakery has seen many owners come and go. The “Bebee”family operated this place for over 60 years, which is incredible. The current owners are Andrew and Sharon have been here since 1989, not quite 60 years like the Bebee family but 34 years at the one bakery is very impressive.

From what I’ve been told this bakery can get crazy busy and the line up here can get out of control. The first thing that caught my eye when I walked through the door was the super impressive cabinet display. Absolutely everything here looked divine and I wanted to try multiple food items at once. Mind mind was wondering all over the shop especially when the fresh doughnuts came out. This bakery is known for its doughnuts and I can now see why. Tray after tray came out and every single one of them was mouthwatering. I needed to keep focused on the 🥧’s and get this party started otherwise the power of the doughnut would have got the better of me.

Pretty easy decision this week. I was super keen to try the Port Elliot “Pie of the Month” The bakers have come up with something very different and that was “Eggs Benedict in a 🥧” Eggs Benedict would have to be my favorite breakfast dish, so I was pretty excited to give this one a serious test drive.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.95 was terrific value. This was a great sized 🥧 in both depth and diameter. Also this 🥧 could easily be classified as a gourmet 🥧. Extremely well priced. 9/10

2. Meat Ratio – Very good, I’d say this 🥧 was about 95% full. The pastry did rise a little on the top but overall you’d be very happy with the ratio of this 🥧. 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Minced beef,
free range egg
shaved smoked leg ham,
hollandaise sauce,
cheddar cheese and
cracked pepper. The flavour of this 🥧 was really nice. As a huge eggs benny fan I’m giving this flavor a huge thumbs up. 9.5/10

4. Pastry – Color, shape, shrinkage and stability all were very very good. The top bake was super crunchy and tasted great. Only negative was the bottom, sides and just under the lid were all slightly underdone and this has affected the score. This was nothing major but clearly visible in the photos. The pastry flavour itself was really nice. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – Terrific temp. No issues here. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46/50 🥧🥧

This was a very different 🥧 and one I throughly enjoyed. Look eggs benedict won’t be everyone’s first choice of 🥧 but I loved it and this 🥧 was a an absolute beauty. The 🥧 itself was a great size, priced accordingly and the flavour was excellent. Only negative was the slight wet lines in the top, bottom and side bakes. Apart from these small issues this was a really nice product and nicely put together.

This bakery is truly something special and a place that cannot be missed. As mentioned earlier the cabinet display is exceptional and the doughnuts and 🥧’s well they speak for themselves. The line up here can get out of control so bare that in mind when planning your next visit here.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to meet Andrew, but a massive thanks to Sharon and son Eli for such a warm welcome and for their hospitality. This is a incredible business run by an incredible family. The bakery is a huge operation employing over 30 plus staff of which half of them are family members and that’s pretty special. 60% of businesses fail within the first 3 years in Australia and this bakery has been around for over a 160 plus years which is mind blowing. This family is yet another bakery success story and I’m so great full to be able to share this bakeries incredible story.

Our stay in Port Elliot was pretty awesome. The caravan park was a little pricey but the location and facilities itself was superb. The beaches and foreshore are absolutely stunning with heaps of walking tracks to explore.
