After leaving Sugar ‘n Spice & All Things Nice I jumped in the car and made my way over to
Pick Ave Deli and Bakery. From the moment I arrived in Mount Gambier I had so many people recommend this bakery to me and told me it was a must visit.
Pick Ave Deli and Bakery is located at 34 Pick Ave and is only a short drive from the centre of town. The place has been a corner store, deli and bakery since the 1950’s and 75 odd years laters it’s still powering on. Current owners Darren and Sandra have been here for over 25 years and the business employs over 20 odd locals. Darren been around the traps for a long time and started his apprenticeship in town at the age of 17 and still is heavily involved in the industry.
You don’t see many old school corner shops/bakeries around anymore and this is certainly one of them. The building itself is quite big inside, it has a huge cabinet display filled with sweets treats even a lolly cabinet. There’s also signage on the walls referencing Darren’s favourite footy team the “Collingwood Magpies” After meeting the team and getting a guided tour of the bakery it was time to head over to the warmer and choose a 🥧 to review.
This old school bakery has all your traditional flavours on the menu. There was one flavour that caught my eye and that was their highly popular “Pizza 🥧” it’s been a fair while since I’ve reviewed this particular flavoured 🥧 and I was super keen to give this one go.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.70 was reasonable value for this particular 🥧. It wasn’t the biggest of 🥧’s in the depth department, but it was still an acceptable oval shaped 🥧. The only way to fix this is using deeper tins and I would imagine Darren has been using these tins for quite some time, so why change. 7.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – While it was full it wasn’t the deepest of 🥧’s, but it still was full. 10/10
3 Flavour – The flavour was pretty good, I thought it tasted more like a lasagna 🥧 then a pizza 🥧 but nevertheless the flavour was nice. Mince, diced bacon, tomato paste, basil and a layer of cheese. I would have liked to have seen maybe a few mushrooms and capsicums added in, but overall the flavor was more than acceptable and enjoyable. 8/10
4. Pastry – The overall standard of the pastry was pretty good. The top was a little dark, but nothing to worry about and the cheese was melted perfectly into the top of the 🥧. The shape and stability was excellent, when the 🥧 was tipped up side down it didn’t move a inch. The bottom bake was slightly underbaked (wet lines) as pics will show and the bake thickness was a smidge too thick. This could have easily been a once off and it’s nothing that cannot be tweaked or fixed. The pastry did have a really nice flavour to it which made the experience more enjoyable. 7.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

Nothing flash or fancy just good old fashioned 🥧. All scoring categories were fairly consistent with only a few minor tweaks needed (mainly bottom bake) The flavor was my favourite and what I did enjoy was the cheese on top was the exact amount and cooked perfectly. While it wasn’t the deepest of 🥧’s it was still good value and reasonably priced. As previously mentioned it’s been ages since I’ve had a pizza 🥧 and I was very happy with my choice. Well done team, I would have no hesitation having another one.
This is a great little 🥧 joint and most definitely one you need to check out. Plenty of quality products, plenty of seating room inside and most of all, great staff who are super friendly.
To Darren and Sandra thank you for allowing me into your business and allowing me to share your 🥧 journey. Darren you a bloody legend, 43 years in the industry and showing no signs of slowing down. It’s was a absolute pleasure sitting down with you, chewing the fat and listening to your journey. All the best mate, you will 100% see me in your wonderful bakery again.
Mount Gambier is one place that has been on my list for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. A huge thanks to all the locals the tips, recommendations and most of all the friendly vibes from everyone made our stay so enjoyable. This is one place I will certainly becoming back to.
