Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery

Our stay in Adelaide had come to a end but our plan was to return to the area in a few months after we finish exploring both the Eyre and Yorke Pensinula’s. We decided to pump out a huge day of driving. Our mission was to get to the little town of Poochera some 650km away. Before we left the Adelaide area, I wanted to pop into a bakery that’s been on my hit list for over 2 years. The bakery I was referring to was
Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery.

Para Hills Hot Bread Bakery is located on Bridge Road Parra Hills. The bakery was opened over 20 years by a incredible women named Vu and her 🥧 journey is quite inspirational. Originally from Vietnam Vu arrived by boat to 🇦🇺 as a 17 year old with only the clothes on her back and a passion for cooking quality food. This passion of cooking lead her to working in several bakeries gaining vital experience before taking the plunge and opening up her own place.

Open 7 days (6am -6pm) the first thing you notice when you walk through the door is all the awards and accolades this bakery has racked up over the last 20 years. The walls are scattered head to toe with a reminder of how EPIC the products are in this bakery. From the fresh sourdough to the cakes and then to the glorious 🥧’s absolutely everything here is all made on premises and with and local ingredients. Once again the doughnuts got my attention early as did the french vanilla slices but it was the smell and colour of 🥧’s that really had me frothing from the mouth and I was keen to get started.

For this weeks review I left the 🥧 of choice and decision up to Vu. This wasn’t a smart move as Vu bought out a tray with 12 🥧’s on it !! I’m a machine in the eating department but smashing 12 🥧’s is beyond me. So i took control of the situation and ended up making my own choice. In the end I went with the “Slow cooked beef tendon red curry 🥧” or the Vietnamese name is Bo’ Kho 🥧 !!!! This thing looked incredible.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.80
represented terrific value. Oval/Boat shaped 🥧 and once again the depth and diameter was more than acceptable. Also the ingredients in this 🥧 was first class. 9/10

2. Meat Ratio – Almost full. Probably 95% full, probably just a little bit just under the lid could have been added. A great mixture of meat and vegetables. Overall very good value. 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Exceltional !!! Slow cooked beef, spicy red curry, carrot, onion and lemon grass. While the flavour gave you a super kick, it was still very eatable. The beef was beautifully cooked as were the veggies. This was without question a terrific flavoured 🥧. 10/10

4. Pastry – loved it !!! Color ✅ Stability ✅ Shrinkage ✅ Shape ✅ In my opinion all the bakes were perfect and the pastries overall flavour was superb. Everything out it was classy. 10/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect temp, no issues at at. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 48.5/50 🥧🥧

Wow !!! This was a ripping 🥧. Absolutely everything about it was beautiful. The 2 standouts was the flavour and pastry. The flavour in particular has a serious kick to it and the meat melted in your mouth. The pastry was perfect in every way. If you love curry or any 🥧 with a little go in it, you’ve got try this one. Vu and her team absolutely nailed this one. I did try 3 of her other flavoured 🥧’s and they were all outstanding.

This is an incredible bakery and a place that’s 100% worth adding to your 🥧 list. This visit was truly amazing and totally worth the 2 year wait. Vu is a special lady, with an incredible work ethic. I’m so privileged to have met her and been able to share her amazing 🥧 journey. We will defiantly be stopping in again on our way back from both the pensilula’s.

The drive over to Ceduna was pretty awesome, heaps of little towns and lots to explore. Don’t forget to stop in and see the giant cockatoo at Kimba and if you need a place to camp the
POOCHERA HOTEL & CARAVAN PARK was a great little overnighter. The feed was awesome and the locals made you feel extremely welcome.

Sunday night will be my first bakery review on the Eyre Pensinula and first up on the list is Elliott’s Bakery & Cafe located at Streaky Bay. Our time around Streaky and Smokey Bay was unbelievable and I cannot wait to share our experience with you guys.
