With the Mallacoota Bakery ticked off the list it was time to jump in the car and continue the 🥧 tour. I’d made plans to stay at the
Nicholson General Store and Post Office for 4 nights but before I got there I had to make one more quick stop off. This stop was the to visit the legends at Orbost Bakery. I missed this bakery on my last tour in 2025 and promised current owners Bevan and Amanda I wouldn’t miss them this current trip.
The small town of Orbost is Orbost is a town in the East Gippsland, and 375km east of Melbourne it’s where the Princes Highway crosses the Snowy River. The bakery itself is located Nicholson Street and is open Monday to Friday.
When Bevan and Amanda took over this place almost 6 years ago, the timing was shithouse to say the least. As they were leaving Melbourne the city went into the biggest lockdown in the states history and suddenly covid was in full swing. Fast forward 6 years and many industry awards later they are still here knocking out sensational products.
Speaking of products the cabinets were totally full with a huge selection of bakery treats. The 🥧 warmer was totally full as well and i was super keen to get this review started.
Bevan and Amanda have created an excellent selection of 🥧’s on the menu, with all the old school favourites available. For this weeks review I went back to the basics and went with the good old “Chunky Steak” it’s been so long since I’ve reviewed one of these particular flavours and Bevan mentioned it’s one of their best selling 🥧’s
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.50 was more than reasonable value for a 🥧 of this size and quality. It wasn’t the deepest of 🥧’s but it was a decent oval shaped 🥧 and just about full. 8/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – 95% Full !!! You’d be very happy with the fill in this 🥧 9.5/10
3 Flavour – This was a basic chunky steak 🥧 packing a great flavour. The meat was tender and wasn’t gristly at all. I really loved the dark gravy sauce was wonderful. Nothing much more to say apart from great work mate, I thoughly enjoyed the flavour in this 🥧 8/10
4. Pastry – The pastry was probably the best part of this🥧 in my opinion. The color caught my attention straight away, it was golden and extremely well presented. Zero shrinkage, great stability and the thinkness was top notch. The only negative was the top bake was slightly underdone. This was only very minor and easily a once off. Apart from that the pastry was sensational great work. 9.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect !!! No issues. 10/10

Bevan has done a sterling job with this 🥧. It’s been ages since I’ve had real chunky steak 🥧 and this one was totally worth the wait. The pastry was my favourite part, it had quality written all over it. The other scoring categories were very consistent and to be honest there is nothing really to work on. Great effort mate, your a quality baker and I loved doing this review. Highly reccommeded.
Add this bakery and this beautiful little town to your travel plans. The bakery has plenty of seating and if Meerkat’s you thing you’ve gotta check out Amanda’s huge collection of Meerkat dolls. Supporting these little communities is so important and Orbost is one place you won’t be disappointed with. If your looking at a new business venture the bakery is up for sale at a very reasonable price. Full details are on my website.
Bevan and Amanda thank you so much for having me in and allowing me to share your 🥧 journey. This visit was 100% worth the wait and Bevan you make a quality product mate. You purchased this place at a time of uncertainty and no one knew what the future looked like. Fast forward 6 years and you guys have worked extremely hard and have a wonderful business and hopefully it sells sometime in the future.
