As promised the next three reviews are from bakeries located in the northern beaches area of Sydney. The whole northern beaches area is absolutely stunning and is home to some of the best bakeries and 🥧 joints in 🇦🇺. My first visit was to Oliver’s Pies located at Avalon Beach.

Open 7 days a week the bakery has been in existence for 14 years, in fact it’s having its 14th birthday today. The place is located at 1 Careel Head Road Avalon Beach. Avalon Beach is a northern beachside suburb of Sydney. It is 28 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district.

Owner Dan has been baking since the age of 16 and started in 🥧 journey over the ditch in NZ. At the age of 20 he moved over to Australia worked in numerous places until this current location came available and he jumped at it. Once inside the cabinets are filled with a fantasic selection of freshly baked products. The big eye catcher for me was the massive 🥧 menu on the wall and I couldnt wait to get started.

The menu board has over 22 different varieties and flavours to choose from. It literally has everything and will cater for every 🥧 lover. Dan’s team has done a sensational job with some of the exotic flavours. I popped in here 12 months ago and smashed the chunky peppered steak and it was excellent, so I wanted to give it a crack again to see if it was as good as the first time.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – Some will argue that $9 is too expensive and that may be the case. For this review I’ve taken into account the area I was in. The 🥧 was totally full and I mean totally full and it weighed a very healthy 283 grams which is quite heavy. After considering all the above $9 is suburb value in my opinion. 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Almost busting out the top it was that full. Excellent ratio. 10/10

3. Flavour – The flavour was epic !!! Once again I’ve picked another pepper flavoured 🥧 that had some serious kick. You could see and easily taste the peppercorns with every single bite, while they were 🔥 it’s not enough to scare you away. The combination of huge meat chunks and mince blended beautifully and the meat was super tender. Fantasic job team you’ve nailed this flavour. 10/10

4. Pastry – The overall pastry was near perfect in my opinion. Let’s start with the negatives and mind you they were only minor. The bottom bake had a little wet line (pics will show) this could easily have been a once off. The top of the 🥧 was a little blotchy in color and one again this was probably nit picking. On a positive note, the pastry had perfect stability, no shrinkage and both bake thicknesses were faultless. The top bake was perfect and up there with the best I’ve seen. The pastry flavour was beautiful and also couldn’t be faulted. Excellent job team. 9/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!! 10/10

This was close to the perfect 🥧 as you could probably get. If you’re into pepper flavoured 🥧’s with a little grunt, you going to love this one. The negatives were only minor and small issues the could easily been a once off or could be fixed. The top bake was exceptional as the pics will show. The meat chunks were huge and melted in your mouth. The 🥧 was choc a block and $9 was priced very well. Dan and his team have excelled with this one !!! Awesome job guys up there with the best I’ve had.

This place is an absolute cracker and needs to be added to you 🥧 book. If Avalon is too far, Dan has a second shop located at Narraweena. There is plenty of parking available and these 🥧’s are up there with the best I’ve had highly recommended. Side note the “Mexican” 🥧 was unbelievable.

Dan, thank you so much for coming back to me and allowing me to share you incredible 🥧 journey. What you’ve done and achieved in this industry is amazing and you’re as passionate as ever and that’s inspiring. The whole time I was there you seeked feedback, asked questions and always striving for excellence. The boy from NZ has certainly made a impact on the aussie 🥧 game and the journey isn’t over quite yet. Take care mate and you will 100% see me poke my head into your awesome bakery again.
