Review No 20
Oliver’s Bakery Cafe
(Ulverstone TAS)

Feb 2025

The Staker/Xavier wedding was a massive event and I had a massive headache and hangover to prove it. Even with the hangover I still had one more bakery to visit to complete this Tassie trip. I left Launceston and made my way over to Ulverstone to meet with Scott and Belinda from Oliver’s Bakery & Cafe Ulverstone

Oliver’s Bakery and Cafe is located in the heart of Ulverstone (north west Tassie) and has been open for over 40 years. Scott started his apprenticeship way back in 1982 and after all these years is still in the bakery most days. The bakery is open 7 days a week and employs a whopping 25 staff which includes 4 bakers. The building has been totally
refurbished, but was once a CBA bank and the old strong room (safe) is still evident which was pretty awesome to see.

The layout and cabinet display at this place is super impressive and flows exceptionally well. The selection on offer here is enormous and absolutely every bakery item you could ask for is here. Speaking of items the 🥧’s were fresh out of the oven and I couldn’t wait to get started.

Over 14 different flavors on the menu to choose from including Tassie famous scallop 🥧. After looking at the menu for a while it was a chicken flavoured 🥧 that got my attention. I decided on a “chicken, brie & mushroom 🥧” and I was happy with my decision.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $6.80 is tremendous value. Boat shaped 🥧 and a decent size as well. Also the brie cheese used in this 🥧 is from “Wicked” cheese, it’s sensational but not cheap. In my opinion $6.80 is very very affordable. 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – No complaints here the 🥧 was full to the brim 10/10

3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 was really nice. The chicken pieces were very generous and the mushrooms tasted fantastic. The Wicked brie cheese was amazing and complimented the 🥧 well. Well done guys, I really enjoyed the flavour in this 🥧. 8.5/10

4. Pastry – The postitives were the color (amazing), stability, shape, and limited shrinkage. All of the above were of a very high standard. Both bakes (top and bottom) were too thick and underbaked this could have been a once off but affected this pastry score. 7/10

5. Serving Temperature – Excellent serving temp. Straight out of the oven into the mouth. 10/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44.5/50 🥧🥧

Overall this was a really nice product, with only the bakes and thicknesses that needed attention. The flavour of this 🥧 was beautiful and the added “Wicked” brie cheese was a fantastic idea. $6.80 is great value and the 🥧 was completely full which was a bonus. All the scores were very consistent over the five categories. I’ve said it many times before chicken is not my preferred 🥧 of choice, but I really enjoyed this one. Great job guys. 100% add this bakery to your bakery travel plans, it’s a absolute belter and you won’t be disappointed.

A huge thanks to Scott and Belinda for their incredible hospitality. Apart from being a top bloke, Scott is an icon in the Tassie baking industry and what he’s achieved and given back to the industry is remarkable. At a time when he and Belinda should be putting there feet up, they are both still putting in huge hours at the bakery and deserve every success that comes their way. Stay in touch mate.

This mini Tassie tour was sensational. Tassie never disappoints and the place has so much on offer and caters for everyone. This two week trip saw me visit 10 plus bakeries and visit many more I’d previously reviewed back in 2022. If you’re planning a trip to Tasmania allow plenty of time and check the weather conditions. A huge thanks to everyone who has welcomed me into their bakers and businesses I’m truly grateful for your time and you’re incredible . Tassie you have been a blast and I cannot wait to come back.
