Mullumbimby Bakery

2024 🥧 Tour

Mullumbimby Bakery
(Mullumbimby NSW)

My Nimbin experience was something a little different and my next destination was a town with similar characteristics. I was heading to the town of Mullumbimby. Tucked away in the lush hinterland of Byron Bay, it has the ambience of a true hippie town. Here, vintage boutiques, holistic wellness centres and cute cafes line the streets. One of the main attractions close to Mullum (as the locals call it) is Crystal Castle

All that sounds terrific, but I
was heading to see Scott from the Mullumbimby bakery. This was another bakery, I’d been meaning to get to for some time, but never go the chance because of various circumstances. Located in Stuart Street this is another classic old school bakery. Open five and a half days a week, Scott has had this place for about 8 years and prior to that he was at the Bruns Bakery for a tick over 14 years.

First thing that caught my eye upon my arrival was the price of the 🥧’s and the chocolate doughnut staring me right in the eye. I also had to ask twice if the prices were accurate, because upon first glance they were too bloody cheap. Sadly this had to be a quick visit as, Scott was on his way out of the bakery when I arrived. With that in mind I quickly met the staff got the quick tour and headed straight for the 🥧 warmer.

After smashing a few 🥧’s various flavoured 🥧’s at the Nimbin bakery earlier in the day, I wanted something basic to try and review. Scott suggested I try one of his most popular 🥧’s and that was his mince/pepper combo

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $5.40 was insane value and too cheap !!! Rarely do you get see a 🥧 around that five bucks range and this was a beauty. Excellent value 10/10

2. Meat Ratio – Almost full !!! The 🥧 had sunk in the middle a fraction but you would be very happy with the fill ratio of this 🥧. 9.5/10

3. Flavour – A mixture of mince and chunky beef this 🥧 had quite a bit of flavour to it. The peppercorns were clearly evident and were the perfect mix. I really enjoyed this one, good job guys. 8/10

4. Pastry – Color, shape, shrinkage and stability were all very good. The middle had sunk a little, but nothing too major. The pastry top was incredibly flakey and had a really nice flavour to it. Only negatives were the side bakes were a little thick and ever so slightly underbaked. The top bake was ok, but a fraction underdone. On a good note the bottom bake and thickness were perfect. Overall a few minor points to work on but nothing of real concern. 7/10

5. Serving Temperature – A smidge on the cool ish side but nothing major 9/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 43.5/50 🥧🥧

As far as pepper 🥧’s go, this was was a very good standard. At $5.40 this 🥧 was dirt cheap and the meat ratio was almost perfect. The flavor was also very good and I particularly enjoyed the peppercorns that were littered throughout this 🥧. The pastry had a nice flavour to it, while the only negative was the pastry thickness (side bake) and slight wet lines (side bake). This was only a small issue and can easily be fixed. Overall I really enjoyed this 🥧 and would easily have another one without hesitation.

As huge thanks to Scott and his team for having me in. This is a cracking old school bakery, filled with all the old school products. 100% you should be adding this bakery to your own 🥧 book.

This was very much a impromptu visit and Scott was extremely accommodating. Scott’s a terrific fella and I wish him and his family all the best. Also a shout out to Darren from Nimbin Bakery for lining up this review for me.

Similar to Nimbin, Mullumbimby is different and very quirky, but defiantly worth the visit. Last time I was here it was just after the devestating 2022 floods, so it was good to see the town back thriving again.
