It’s a great feeling to be back on the road again, it’s been about 6 months since the caravan has hit the tar and this 8 week tour is going to be sensational. I’ve visiting places I’ve never been to before and it all starts with the NSW South Coast.
The first stop was Moruya which is located about 30mins south of Bateman’s Bay. The plan is to park up for 4 days and see what this place has to offer. My first review for this tour was Mogo Pies
situated in the little town of Mogo just north of Moruya.
Mogo’s Pies was opened three and a half years ago by a lovely couple named Chris and Alena, however there has been a bakery in this building on and off for many years. Chris has been in the baking game for over 25 years and is as passionate as ever to keep improving, he’s also employed a young apprentice which is awesome to see, as they are the future of this industry.
While only small there is a great selection of savory’s and sweet treats. I had my eye on the french vanilla slice with a choc top and OMG it looked devine, but I needed to stay focused and suggested to Chris that we get started smashing a few 🥧’s.
Chris has created an awesome range of flavours on the menu. From traditional flavours to your more gourmet ones this menu has everything. After studying the form guide for a wee bit, I finally chose something totally different to review and that was Chris’s “Beef Massaman” I’m a big fan of massaman so I was super keen to see how this one stacked up.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8 for a gourmet 🥧 and one of this quality is great value. The 🥧 was a decent size and weighed in above industry standard. With gourmet 🥧’s you need to take into account the intgredients etc and this 🥧 is no different. In my opinion this was a terrific priced product. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally Full and a lot a meat as well. 10/10
3. Flavour – Absolutely sensational !!! The flavour oozed out of this 🥧 with every bite and the experience got better the longer it went. A mild massaman curry but with a little kick (nothing major) The meat was incredibly tender and there was plenty of it scattered throughout this 🥧. Nothing more to say Loved it !!! 9.5/10
4. Pastry – Chris has done a sterling job with the quality of this pastry. The most impressive aspect was the bakes and bake thicknesses both were perfect. The stability was also perfect, as the 🥧 held firm right to the last bite. Shape and shrinkage was also of the highest quality. The color of the 🥧 was a little dark and that was the only real negative and this was very minor. Apart from that Chris has done a epic job with this pastry. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Serving temp was spot on !!! No issues here at all. 10/10

This was a excellent 🥧 as was all the 🥧’s i sampled on my visit. Upon reflection there wasn’t much wrong with this 🥧. The flavour for me was the standout and it got better with every bite. The pastry quality was also superb and Chris’s pastry was extremely consistent with every 🥧 i sampled. The 🥧 was priced well and it was totally full. All in all this was a fantastic 🥧 and one I highly recommend. Awesome job team, excellent job.
This is one 🥧 joint and little town you won’t wanna miss. It can get very busy, but there is still plenty of parking available. Mogo Pies also have a little seating area on the varendah to sit and relax. 100% add this legendary 🥧 place to your list you won’t be disappointed.
I cannot thank Chris and Alena enough for there amazing hospitality, this was a sensational visit. When i had my charity day a few years back these legends were one of the first bakeries to put there hand up and support the cause. Running a small business in a small town is tough and yet these guys roll their sleeves up every day and do fantastic job. Chris your products are incredible and your a valuable asset to this industry, it was great to finally meet you both.
