Mawsons Bakery/Cafe
(Euroa VIC)
June 2025
Sadly my Victorian tour was coming to an end, but I still had one more visit to complete before making my way north. My last stop was the beautiful country town of Euroa and Mawsons Bakery Cafe. Euroa is a 1 hr 45 min drive from Melbourne via the M31 Hume Freeway. It’s situated in a rich agricultural district which is noted for its farming, fine wool production and thoroughbred horse industry.
Mawsons Bakery/Cafe is owned and operated by David and Gayle Mawson. The bakery has been around for 40 odd years, but this wonderful couple have been here for almost 12 of the 40 years. These guys had no idea what baking was all about when they first took over. Dave was farming and also the local school bus driver and Gayle a successful music teacher. When the opportunity came up, they jumped head first in and have since taken this place to a whole new level.
Operating seven days a week and employing a team of 15, this bakery embodies old traditional values. The extensive range of products available is truly impressive, and the establishment’s old-school service standards are unparalleled. From the moment you enter, Gayle’s team extends a warm and welcoming atmosphere; you may even be treated to Gayle performing one of her favourite tunes. After belting out a few tunes, it was time to get some 🥧’s out of the warmer and have some fun.
There is a massive variety on offer here and trust me I tried them all. From the classics to the exotic gourmet flavours the team have created a fantastic menu that will suit everyone. I enlisted Phil and Shaun from the engine room to give me a hand with choosing a 🥧 to review. In the end I went for something totally different and that was their award winning “Duck Hoisin” This was a flavour I’ve never tried before and gee wizz this thing looked epic.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – Yes $9.80 is up there for sure, but so is the price of peking 🦆. This is a gourmet 🥧 through and through and it weighed in at around 260 odd grams. Overall yes, it’s pricey but you pay for what you get and in this case your getting a quality gourmet 🥧. 8.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full !!! Zero issues here. 10/10
3. Flavour – OMG the flavour was ridiculous !!! Listen to this, slow cooked peking duck, hoisin sauce, spring onions, garlic, ginger, pak choy and a few hidden ingredients. The duck melted in your mouth and the combination of ingredients was amazing. Nothing more to say, apart from giving this a perfect score of 10/10
4. Pastry – Everything about this pastry was very good. From the color, to the bakes there wasn’t much wrong with this pastry. The only negative was the side bake was a little thick and that’s probably nit picking a bit too.
In fact all the 🥧’s I sampled had excellent pastry consistancy. Awesome effort team, great stuff. 9.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp. No issues at all. 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 48/50 🥧🥧
This was a stunning product and one that totally blew me away. I’ve never experienced a combination of ingredients and flavour quite like it. You can clearly see why this 🥧 won a gold at the recent
Official Great Aussie Comp. Some punters will argue that the price is quite high. $9.80 is up there, but when you’re using an ingredient like peking 🦆 it’s expensive and that costs money. The 🥧 was full, flavour was excellent and pastry was on point. This was very close to the perfect 🥧 and I absolutely loved it. This is one bakery you don’t wanna miss, everything about it is first class. 100% add this joint to your bakery favourites you won’t be disappointed.
This was one of the most entertaining reviews I’ve ever done and this is largely due to Gayle crazy outgoing personality. I thought I was a lunatic, but Gayle takes things to a whole new level. Dave and Gayle’s passion for there staff, this wonderful industry, the products they bake and most of all there community is amazing. What you guys have achieved in 11 years is astonishing and I wish you guys all the very best. Gayle if you ever need a karaoke partner I’m in !!!
My stay at the Euroa Caravan and Cabin Park was phenomenal. This was a bloody awesome park and i cannot recommend this place high enough. 100% add this place to you list.
My Victorian 🥧 tour was absolutely sensational and sadly it’s come to a end. I would like to extend an enormous gratitude to every bakery i visited on this massive tour. To the owners, bakers, apprentices and front counter staff a huge thank you for allowing me to share you 🥧 journey.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
