The 2026 🥧 tour continued to roll on as we started to head further south, swinging around the bottom of the east coast of Australia. I decided to take a short detour off the Princes Highway to the coastal town of Mallacoota and meet the team at the Mallacoota Bakery.
Mallacoota is best described as one of Gippsland’s great escapes. It’s surrounded by the magnificent wilderness of the Croajingolong National Park and set on the beautiful Mallacoota Inlet.
In 2020 this whole area was decimated by bush fires. In total 123 structures were destroyed and 83% of the areas land was burning.
The bakery itself is located on Allen Drive and is directly opposite the caravan park. Owners Andrew and Tracie will celebrate their 4 year anniversary here this September. Darren started his 🥧 journey in Coolum, Qld in 1992. After years out of the game, the opportunity came up here in Mallacoota and next minute the 🥧 legend is back baking again.
Open 6 days a week this is a cracking little joint and the cabinets are filled with all the favourites, but as always my focus was on the 🥧’s, so we decided to get started.
The menu is filled with a great selection of traditional and gourmet flavoued 🥧’s. Making a decision was going to be a little tricky, but I saw one flavour in particular that caught my eye. That was a chicken & mushroom 🥧 in a creamy garlic sauce with crispy bacon. This was something different and one I was very interested in trying.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8 was reasonable value considering the location I was in, plus the difficulty and added cost to get supplies to this part of the country. The 🥧 was also very healthy in size, both depth and diameter was more than satisfactory. 8/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – This bad boy was 95% full, with only a few air pockets that could have been filled. 9.5/10
3 Flavour – This was something a little different and the flavour was wicked. The masterstoke was the added crispy bacon and crispy it was. The crispy bacon had great flavour and was evident with every bite. The chicken pieces were a decent size, the mushrooms blended well with the garlic creamy sauce which was sensational. Awesome flavour. 9/10
4. Pastry – A couple of things to work on but overall the pastry was pretty good. The top bake thickness and the bake needed a slight tweak. The top bake was a tad too thick and needed more bake time as pics will show. The bottom bake thickness was on point but it to was a little underdone. The color, shape and most importantly, the stability were excellent. When tipped upside down the 🥧 didn’t move a muscle. 7/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect !!! No issues. 10/10

This was a great flavoured 🥧 and one I would have again in a heartbeat. The flavour was easily the best part for me and it was that crispy bacon that stole the show. It tasted great, it was crisp and crunchy and most importantly the added garlic was the right amount. The price was acceptable, the 🥧 was almost full and the pastry was there abouts. Andrew has done a fantastic job with his combination of flavours and has produced a 🥧 that your going to really enjoy. Great work mate well done.
If your coming around the bottom bit of the east coast don’t bypass Mallacoota or this wonderful bakery. This community has been through the ringer of late with bush fires affecting tourism and visitor numbers. So take the short drive off the main highway and pop in and explore this wonderful little town. This bakery is a little cracker and cannot be missed.
To Andrew & Tracie a huge, thanks for returning my message and allowing me to pop in and share your incredible 🥧journey. What you guys have achieved in the short time down here is amazing. The community of Mallacoota are so lucky to have a terrific bakery like yours in operation. It takes years for these areas to re-cover from such severe natural disasters. Last years (2025) Christmas was affected by fire warnings which meant the towns Christmas trade was severely affected, so fingers crossed the Easter break brings out the crowds.
