Maldon Bakery
(Maldon VIC)
June 2025
With the Guildford General Store ticked off the list it was time to head to the old town of Maldon to visit Australia’s oldest continuous running bakery. Maldon is a charming historic town where time seems to have stood still, stories of the goldrush, intact streetscapes and historic buildings full of character. Maldon has also been designated “Australia’s first notable town” and as mentioned above Maldon Bakery opened its doors back to 1854.
Owner Rebecca took over this place three years ago and has enlisted her two daughters to help her with the day to day running of the business. One of her daughters is a 1st year bakery apprentice & the other manages the store. The bakery itself is very cute and enriched with history. While not currently working, the wood fire oven is stunning as was the beautiful bakery garden and interior decor.
While only small the cabinet display is beautiful and the products sit on a beautifully handcrafted timber trolley. This is the centerpiece of the bakery and worth the visit alone. As you would expect, there is a great selection of flavours on offer. As I was standing in Australia’s oldest continuous running bakery there was only one flavour that I wanted to choose and that was the plain 🥧.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – At the time of my review the price was $7 now it’s gone to $7.50 and that’s 100% creeping up there for a plain 🥧. Yes the quality of the beef is fantasic but it’s not a gourmet flavoured 🥧. On a positive note the 🥧 was full and a fairly decent size. 7/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full. 10/10
3. Flavour – For a plain 🥧 it had quite a bit of flavour. The combination of mince and chuck steak was cooked well, and the gravy sauce, while a little runny had quite a bit of flavour and tasted nice. Overall the flavour in this 🥧 was more than acceptable. 8/10
4. Pastry – Shape, shrinkage and stability were all very good and could hardly be faulted. The top color of the 🥧 was great, however the bottom and sides were slightly pale and needed a little extra color. The top bake was very good, as was its thinkness. The bottom bake while baked was a smidge too thick and that could have been a once off. The pastry flavour was also very good. A few minor points to work, but overall pretty good. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – A smidge hot but nothing to worry about. 9/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 42/50 🥧🥧
It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed a good old fashioned plain 🥧 and this one didn’t disappoint. The scores were very consistent over the five categories and while there’s a few things to work on, it’s nothing that cannot be tweaked or fixed. For a plain 🥧 I really enjoyed the flavour, it really surprised me. The pastry was very consistent and baked right through. The average punter could argue that $7.50 for a plain 🥧 is up there and that’s the case. However the bakery sources high quality beef and that’s not cheap. Overall I really enjoyed this 🥧 and would have no hesitation recommending it to all the 🥧 punters out there.
A big thanks to Rebecca and her team for having me in and showing me around. This bakery is very unique and it was an awesome experience to finally get there and experience it first hand.
The town of Maldon is 100% worth checking out. The Main Street is like stepping back in time to the late 1800’s. The old buildings are stunning and the history in this place is remarkable. If these buildings could talk the stories would be insane. It’s a place everyone should visit at least one and if you need a place to camp Butts Reserve is highly recommended. It’s a terrific free camp with toilets and close to town.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
