My time in the Huon Valley was spectacular, but it was time to make my way back up to Hobart and visit a few more bakeries. I decided to take the scenic route and check out a few places along the way, that included Cygnet, Kettering and Margate. I was driving through the main street of Cygnet when a saw a sign saying “homemade 🥧’s”. The sign was from M&D Butchery Port Cygnet
I quickly chucked a yewie, parked the car and popped in to introduce myself.

M & D Butchery is located in the heart of Cygnet, open Monday to Friday. Mark and Diana have owned this place for a tick over 5 years and it’s a thriving business.

About 12 months ago Diana started dabbleing around making some homemade 🥧’s and as they say, the rest is history. Fast forward 12 months and this has now become a serious operation. These 🥧’s are made fresh daily, all the ingredients are gluten free and they also make gluten free 🥧’s every couple of days plus made to order. My mouth was drooling and I couldn’t wait to get cracking.

For a butcher shop there’s a sensational variety of flavours on offer. Diana is always mixing things up and coming up with all these new weird but genius flavours. I narrow my selection down to two flavours, the first one was the “German Rouladan” and the second was the famous “Tassie scallop” (curry) I ended up smashing both. The German Rouladen was out of this world but for this review I went with the scallop 🥧.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – At $12 this was terrific value. The majority of scallop 🥧’s I’ve seen and reviewed have ranged between $9 and $14. This 🥧 weighed in at almost 300 grams which is sensational value. Plus it was filled with 9 to 10 scallops, which is a fair bit compared to others I’ve seen. Overall tremendous value. 9/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full and as mentioned above filled with roughly 9 to 10 fresh scallops. 10/10

3. Flavour – Excellent !!!! The zing on the top pallet was the first thing that got me, but it wasn’t enough to distract me from the delicious scallops. The scallop and Diana’s homemade sauce blended together beautifully. The lingering aroma enhanced the appearance and flavour. This was a delicious flavoured 🥧. Well done team !!! 9.5/10

4. Pastry – The colour, shape and stability were all very good. When I tipped this heavy 🥧 on its axis, it didn’t move one bit. On the shrinkage side there was a little bit and the pics will show this. The top bake and thickness were absolutely spot on, but the bottom bake was a smidge thick and slightly underdone. The pastry flavour was superb and couldn’t be faulted. 8.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – No issues here !!! The perfect serving temp. 10/10

This was a fabulous product and Diana has done a wonderful job. The flavour of this 🥧 was sensational and the lingering aroma will stay with me for a long time. The 🥧 was completely jam packed with more scallops then I’ve seen in a Tassie 🥧 before. Some will argue $12 is up there but this was a heavy 🥧 and as mentioned full of fresh scallops. Not a lot to tweak or work on, only a few small things that can easily be fixed. Overall this was a beautiful 🥧 and one I would have again in a heartbeat. Speaking of pies don’t discard the German Rouladen 🥧 !!! Wow it was devine (pics attached)

Keep a eye out for this sign as you drive through Cygnet. You 100% wanna stop in and try these 🥧’s. Mick’s meat and cabinet display is epic and his products extremely well priced.

A huge, thanks to Mark and Diana for their incredible hospitality. This visit was a cold call at its very best and yet the legends welcomed me in with open arms, and were more than happy to share their 🥧 journey with me. Hats off to Diana for rolling up her sleeves and having a serious crack at making these awesome 🥧’s. She saw a niche that was missing here in town and now is kicking some serious goals. It’s awesome to see more butcher shops diversifying and making 🥧’s, I absolutely love it !!! Once again well done guys thanks for having me in and when I do make it back to Tassie I will sure be stopping in at your shop.
