JD’s Pies and Taco’s
(Perth WA)

My visit to Perth was almost coming to an end, but before I left I needed to cram in two more reviews, next on the list was JD’s Pies And Tacos. This was an epic little find, one that many people had suggested I go and see while I was in town.

It was there I met owners Nic and Jaya. In fact the day of my visit it was their first day of operation in the new location which is situated at the Sterling Central Shopping Centre in the Perth suberb of Westminster. The couple started doing Mauritian food 3 years ago and last year Nic had a craving for some quality 🥧’s, so he started fooling around and making a few from scratch. Soon after he put a few in the warmer to see how they went. In fact they went ballistic and in the blink of an eye the 🥧 faithful started flocking to this new 🥧 joint. Basically before then Nic had never baked a 🥧 in his life, it’s a pretty remarkable achievement.

The selection on offer here is more than reasonable with a great choice of gourmet flavours. One particular falvoured 🥧 caught my attention and that was the beef, cheese, and jalapeño. The smell coming out of this thing was insane and with that I couldn’t wait to get started.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $9 is creeping up there, but still very good value for a gourmet 🥧 like this one. It was a good size in weight and diameter and weighed in at 310 grams which is well above industry standard. It’s not often you see 🥧’s above the 300 grams and this one was a good find. 9/10

2. Meat & Fill Ratio – About 85% full, with a spots here and there that could have been filled. 8.5/10

3. Flavour – Sensational !!! For a bloke who has only recently started making 🥧’s he’s done a sterling job with this one. The meat was beautifully cooked, and the cheese and jalapeños tasted amazing. The jalapeños had some kick, but it wasn’t enough to get you worried. In fact, the cheese and jalapeños were a great combination. Well done Nic, you have nailed the flavor in this 🥧 10/10

4. Pastry – Overall pretty good !!! Shrinkage, stability and colour were all very good. Shape was a little how’s your father but nothing major. The top and bottom, bake thickness was really good, however both bakes were a little underdone. A couple things to work on nothing major. Once again for a bloke who’s only recently started making 🥧’s this pasty was fantastic. 8/10

5. Serving Temperature – This bugger was a tad on the hot side, therefore I had to wait a couple of minutes before digging in 9.5/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧

This was a great 🥧 and one that was choc a block full of flavour. Apart from a few minor blemishes here and there the scores were high across the board. The flavour in this 🥧 for me was my favourite. Every bite was delicious and the individual flavours were very consistent throughout. Cannot recommended this 🥧 high enough, great job Nic and Jaya. I’m so glad I did some research and found this hidden gem. 100% add this place to your list, it’s well worth the visit.

A huge thanks to Nic and Jaya for having me in, seriously what a bunch of legends. These guys are having a dig and Nic turned his love of 🥧’s into a business, him and Jaya are kicking some serious goals. For a couple who had never made a 🥧 before, gee there doing a great job. 🥧’s and 🌮’s now that’s a very unusual combo, but it works a treat
This review was something very different but so enjoyable. What a great couple and I wish them all the best.
