2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 17
Huon Valley Bakery Cafe
(Hounville TAS)

Feb 2025

After smashing the wallaby 🥧 at Summer Kitchen bakery, it was time to jump in the car and head to my next review. Lucky for me it was just a short trip down the road into the town of Hounville. Right on the main drag you will find the Huon Valley Bakery Cafe
and that’s where you will meet current owners Malcolm and Sue.

Malcolm and Sue built this bakery up from scratch almost 10 years ago and haven’t looked back. Originally from Adelaide, Malcolm has been tossing flour for 40 odd years which is quite astonishing.

The bakery is a real family affair with son Dylan also in the place busy pumping out truck loads of coffee each day. The bakery is open 6 days a week and can get crazy busy as I experienced. Although it is only tiny on the inside, the cabinets are bursting with freshly baked old school favourites. The impressive cabinet display will have you dazzled from the moment you walk in and it almost had me until I reminded myself the real reason why I was here. The day of my visit the crew were rushed off their feet so we didn’t have a lot of time to chat. So with that in mind it was over to the 🥧 warmer to get started.

Eleven plus different flavours to choose from here, you wouldn’t believe it one of those flavours was a “Curried Wallaby 🥧” Two wallaby falvoured 🥧’s in the same day what are the odds of that? Anyway, I thought bugger it, while I was down this way, why not give this one a go.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – In my opinion the $6.50 price tag was very cheap. As I said in my last review “Wallaby” would be considered a game meat gourmet 🥧. While it wasn’t a massive 🥧 it was still industry standard and nearly full. You’d be hard-pressed to find a wallaby 🥧 priced like this in your travels. 10/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Apart from the 🥧 sinking a fraction on the top, it was almost full. Great job on the this one. 9.5/10

3. Flavour – Not bad at all !!! The meat was cooked well and was super tender. The rich dark curry gravy complimented the wallaby meat well. The curry wasn’t overly hot and could’ve done with a bit more in my opinion. I would consider this to be a mild curry at best, but everyone’s taste buds are very different. Only negative was the gravy ratio outweighed the meat ratio. Plus the curried gravy was a fraction runny, therefore eating this bad boy was a little tricky. Overall the flavour of this 🥧 was nice. 7/10

4. Pastry – A bit of mixed bag here! The shape, colour and shrinkage were all sound, while the stability was a little tricky due to the gravy sauce being a little runny. The top part of the 🥧 had sunken in the middle a fraction, this wasn’t major but still evident in the pictures. Both the top and bottom bakes were a fraction thick and slightly underbaked. The bottom bake was a little soft but still held together strong. The pastry flavour was really nice and tasted fantastic. Overall, a few things to work on, but still acceptable. 6/10

5. Serving Temperature – This little bugger was a little hot, but nothing to get excited about. 9/10

Overall Rating
🥧🥧 41.5/50 🥧🥧

This was a nice product and I’m glad I gave it a go. The $6.50 price tag, was too cheap in my opinion for a game flavoured meat 🥧. The flavour was good, but as mentioned the gravy content outweighed the wallaby meat. The pastry had an awesome taste to it, but both bakes (top & bottom) needed more time in the oven. A few things to tweak and work on but overall a solid 🥧 and one that I would have no hesitation trying again.

Add this bakery to your Tassie travel plans, it’s a little cracker. If you’re planning on heading down to the southern end of Tasmania, this is a great place to call in and stock up on supplies. This bakery is now the most southern bakery in 🇦🇺.

A massive thanks to Malcolm, Sue and Dylan for their time and hospitality. This was an impromptu visit, but the team made me feel very welcome and took the time out of their day to share their 🥧 journey with me. The community feel in this bakery was clearly evident and it’s great to see the community of Hounville get behind this place. The guys do a wonderful job here and I wish them all the best in the future.

This whole Houn Valley area is something special. It was my second time down this way and I still didn’t get to see everything. If you like your wine, cheese and hiking your’re going to love this part of Tassie. Cannot recommend this area high enough.
