After a awesome weekend with new friends at Lake Mulwala i hit the road again this time headed for the Vic country town of Cobram. Cobram is located on the Murray River, just across this grand waterway from the small New South Wales border town of Barooga. Close to the main area of town in William Street you will find the the highly successful
Hungie Fangs Artisan Bakery.

Hungie Fangs Artisan Bakery opened its doors 10 years ago by owners Damien and Leena. Both born and bred locals Damo has been in the baking industry for over 28 years. One thing about Damo I love is his passion for bringing young apprentices through the industry. Over his career he has trained and mentored 23 apprentices. One of those is his current 3rd year apprentice Jake who recently competed at the recent “Baking Excellence” event in Sydney. Jake’s a ripping young lad with a bright future.

I have to admit this is one of the best laid out bakeries areas I have ever seen. From the moment you walk in the door everything flows exceptionally well and there is nothing out of place. Then there’s the cabinet display which is phenomenal, every single item in these cabinets looked absolutely amazing and I didn’t know where to look. I was like a kid in a lolly shop everywhere I looked something caught my eye. All this food was sending me a bit stir crazy and after meeting the team, it was time to get this party started.

There is 15 plus different variety of flavours on offer and something that will cater for everyone. As soon as I walked in I noticed a sign advertising the winter warmers and it immediately caught my attention. I tried the award winning “Coconut Curry Beef Cheek” which was amazing, but I wanted to try the “Beef Cheek Red Wine Jus” This 🥧 looked incredible and I couldn’t wait to get started.

🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧

1. Value for Money – $8.80
For a gourmet pie of this quality $8.80 is very good value in my opinion. The weight of this 🥧 was above industry standard and it was a decent size in both depth and diameter. Plus beef cheek is not cheap and that needs to be considered. 8.5/10

2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full with beef cheek, no more could be added 10/10

3. Flavour – The flavour in this 🥧 was magic. Every bite just got better and better and there was no way I was sharing this 🥧with anyone. That beef cheek was cooked to perfection and the red wine jus blended in perfectly. Not much more to say except this flavour was perfect. 10/10

4. Pastry – The pastry on this 🥧 , and in fact all the 🥧’s in this bakery is first class. The color, shape, shrinkage, bakes and bake thinknesses were all fantastic. The only negative being a little bit of pastry shrinkage on the top. The pastry flavour was also terrific. The baking team has done a great job on this one. 9.5/10

5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp 10/10

This was as close to the perfect 🥧 as you can get. I absolutely loved this 🥧 and didn’t want this experience to end. The flavour for me was the absolute standout, that beef cheek, and red wine jus combined brilliantly. The pastry flavour tasted great and the 🥧 was completely full. This was a quality 🥧 from a quality baking team. The coconut curry beef cheek was also up there with the best I’ve had. Great job team couldn’t rate this 🥧 high enough.

It doesn’t matter if you’re passing through Cobram or staying in a few days, this is one bakery that you don’t want to miss. Everything about the place is sensational and trust me you going to walk out of the place with way more than you expected.

Damien & Leena are up there with the best business owners I’ve ever met, what they have achieved in this bakery is quite remarkable and it’s only the beginning. What stands out for me is there willingness to help other bakery owners strive to be the best. They do this without fan fair or accolades. This industry needs more bakery owners like Damian & Leena sharing best practices and supporting each other. Well done on all your achievements, you guys rock.

Cobram and surrounds is 100% worth checking out, the area has so much on offer. I parked the van up up for the few nights behind the Strathmerton Hotel, it’s a great little pub and 100% worth the stay.
