A few week ago I jumped in the car and travelled out to the beautiful town of Bungendore. I was on my way to visit the team from Gunna Doo Bakery. Bungendore is a town in the Southern Tablelands Region of NSW. It has become a major tourist centre in recent years, popular with visitors from Canberra and some of it has heritage protection.
The Gunna Doo Bakery & Cafe is family owned and operated and was opened in 1990. This family bakery was started by a legend named Terry better known as “Terry the Pie Man” then sons Grant and Paddy joined the business with the help of Grant’s wife. Then to add to the family theme Grant’s kids Jack, Billy and Steph joined to team. Sadly Terry has passed on, but how cool is it that this business has had three generations of bakers working and keeping this awesome family bakery alive and well.
The bakery is located in Gibraltar Street, open 7 days and employs around 30 staff. That staff number is quite remarkable given the size of this small town. The products on offer are endless plus a there is a full pizza range for all those pizza lovers. For me is was all about the 🥧’s so after meeting the staff and getting the tour it was time to head over to the warmer and get started.
The team have put together a fantastic range of flavors that will suit just about everyone. I did try a chunky steak 🥧 here about 4 months ago and it was great. So with that in mind i really wanted to have another one to see if anything had changed.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.70 in
my opinion represents good value for 🥧 of this depth, diameter and size. Well priced 8/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – This 🥧 was totally full !!! Easy score to adjudicate 10/10
3. Flavour – Nothing flash, just a good old fashioned chunky steak 🥧. A combination of slow cooked chunky meat and mince, then added flavours in a dark gravy sauce. The meat was tender and tasted fantastic. The team have done a great job with this one. 8.5/10
4. Pastry – To be honest there wasn’t much wrong with this pastry. The color and shape were magnificent, and there was very little shrinkage. When tipped upside down, the stability was excellent, and the pastry had a really nice flavour to it. Both bakes were on point with the only issue being the bottom bake. Pics will indicate it was a little thick and this is a easy fix. Apart from that, they have done a great job with this pastry. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp !!! 10/10

This was a quality 🥧 made by quality operators. As far as chunky steak 🥧’s go, this one was up there. All five scoring categories were very consistent, and I was particularly impressed with the quality of the pastry. The price was satisfactory and the 🥧 was completely full. All in all this was a really good product and one I would have again no hesitations whatsoever. Great job guys well done.
This is another sensational bakery to add to your travel plans. The place has everything you would want and more. Also there is plenty of parking around the main street. You won’t be disappointed.
To Jack, Billy and the rest of the team thank you so much for having me in. This 35 year bakery is your classic family owned business and everyone plays their part. The small community of Bungendore and passing tourists are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful bakery at their disposal. It’s a shame I didn’t get to meet Grant and Paddy, but Jack and Billy are absolute legends and it was a privilege to meet them and share their 🥧 journey. Have a great Xmas guys.
