Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Grawin General Store
(Grawin NSW)
June, 2026
After leaving Dubbo we headed north and made our way up to the quirky town of Lightening Ridge. I did do a 🥧 review here back in 2021 but sadly that bakery has since shut its doors. With no other bakery in town I came to the realization that I wasn’t going to get a homemade 🥧 during this trip, but that changed when we hoped in the car and made our way out the nearby opal fields of Grawin.
The Grawin Opal Fields are an authentic outback mining settlement located about 70 km southwest of Lightning Ridge. This place is very different, quirky and most famous for it’s bush-built pubs and traditional off-grid opal mining. The massively popular “Outback Opal Hunters” was filmed out in this area particularly in later seasons of the show
The The Grawin General Store is owned and operated by Sue Tony who have had this place since October last year. They also own the nearby Sheepyard Inn Hotel. As it turns out i was in luck with both places making fresh homemade 🥧’s daily. This little General Store provides the local community a place to get fuel, groceries and other supplies without the hassle of driving all the way back into Lightning Ridge.
Sue makes a great little selection of 🥧’s and these flavours change on a daily basis. The day of my visit Sue had bolognese, chili beef and a slow beef and potato available. I chose the beef and potato and gee wizz it looked fantastic.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7 in my opinion is way too cheap. This was a heavy and full 🥧. Also to even to get a 🥧 out in this remote location is a huge win. If anyone has a whinge about this asking price they are a dead set tight arse. Great value 10/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full nothing more to say 10/10
3. Flavour – This 🥧 had a lovely flavour and it contined on right to the very late bite. Slow cooked beef, potatoes, worcestershire sauce, garlic plus a couple other of Sue’s secret ingredients. What are particularly loved was the potato wasn’t overpowering, and the amount in there was perfect. The beef was incredibly tender and the other ingredients combined well. Really enjoyable 8/10
4. Pastry – Not your usual bakery pastry, but it worked a treat. It was thin, crispy and had a really nice color to it. What surprised me was the stability, it was a little tricky to eat but still held firm to the last bite. The only real negative was on one side of the top bake and part of the bottom bake was slightly underdone. These wet lines are a easy fix and could have easily been a once off. The pastry’s flavour was really nice. 7/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 45/50 🥧🥧
Sue and her little 🥧 making team have done a sterling job with this product. Yes it’s not your normal bakery product but nevertheless, it was pretty damn good. The $7 price tag is fantastic value and the 🥧 was jam packed full. The flavour was delicious and I was surprised how tender the meat was. I’m not a lover of potato in 🥧’s but Sue has nailed the potato ratio. The bakes needed a little tweak, but nothing major. I was extremely lucky and fortunate to find a quality 🥧 like this this in the area i least expected. Great work Sue your 🥧’s get a massive ✅👍 from me and are highly recommended. Great work.
Sue, thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly and inviting me out to your epic little general store. The service you provide to this small community is much neeed and they are extremely lucky and was I to be able to share your story and try your amazing 🥧’s. People don’t understand how tough it can be out here, but every day you roll up your sleeves and do a wonderful job. It was great to see you and you will 100% see me again.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
