Goolwa Bakery
(Goolwa SA)
March, 2026
Our overnight stay in Meningie was great and we continued on with the 🥧 tour making our way to Victor Harbour. I was previously here in 2023 and visited most of the bakeries in the area except one. The one bakery I missed on that trip was the Goolwa Bakery est 1914 at the nearby town of Goolwa.
Goolwa is 89 kilometres from Adelaide, it’s where the mighty Murray river meets the sea. This historic town still pulses with a sense of movement steam trains, paddle steamers, tides, and tales. It’s also where the iconic 1976 movie Storm Boy was filmed.
The Goolwa Bakery itself is over 112 year old and enriched with history. It’s located in Dawson street, open 7 days a week and employing over 14 staff. Current owner Chris has had the place for over 3 years and has the joint absolutely humming. Chris’s achievements are too long to list, he’s worked every job known to man including some of the best restaurants in the nation and abroad.
The 112 year old building is stunning inside and out. It’s two standout features are the beautiful stained glass window out the from and the huge Laucke flour truck mural along the side of the building. Once inside the cabinet display is also impressive, filled with SA’s famous Kitchener buns, award winning doughnuts and much more. After getting the tour and meeting the staff it was time to get this party started.
Chris and his baking team have created a great selection of flavours to choose from. My selection ended up being a was easy one. I did recieve a tip from another baker in Victoria who mentioned that Chris’s plain 🥧 was the best he’d ever tasted. So with that information in mind the “Plain 🥧” was the one I went with.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $6.70 represented great value in my opinion. Weighing in at 270 grams it was a decent sized oval shaped 🥧 and totally fullI. In today’s environment any 🥧 in the six dollar range is well priced. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full !! Nothing more to say 10/10
3. Flavour – One word “Phenomenal” Prime 95cl mince, 16 hour caramelized onions, carrots, celery and herbs. With added worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and a smidge of vegemite the flavour in this thing was stunning. Loved it and more. 10/10
4. Pastry – The pastry in this 🥧 was of the highest quality and not far from being perfect. The color, shape, shrinkage and the ever important shrinkage were all excellent. The top was baked beautifully and the thinkness was on point. The bottom was the perfect thickness, but there was wet lines on one side and parts of the bottom. Apart from this small blemish the pastry was of the highest quality 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here.
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 48/50 🥧🥧
I’m gunna call it, this was the best plain flavoured 🥧 I’ve ever tasted. The experience got better and better right up until the very end. The worcestershire, soy and added vegemite was the real game changer. Yes this combination does seem a little unorthodox, but it totally worked. The $6.70 price tag was fantastic, the 🥧 was totally full and the pastry wasn’t far away. Chris and his team have done an outstanding job with this one and I’m so glad I chose this particular flavour. Highly recommend !!!
This is one bakery you don’t wanna miss. The products are sensational plus the building alone is worth checking out. Add this joint to you ever growing 🥧 list.
A huge thank you to Chris and his wonderful team for having me in. The flavours your creating in your products are truly amazing and I’m greatful I got to try them. What impressed me the most was your willingness to listen, learn, get advise from other industry leaders and consistancy pursuing perfection. It was a pleasure meeting you mate and cannot wait to have one of your amamzing 🥧’s again.
Goolwa, Port Elliott, Victor Harbour, in fact this whole area is 100% worth checking out. The coast line is simply stunning and there is so much to see and do. We stayed at the NRMA caravan park in Victor Harbour. It was reasonably priced clean and a close distance to town.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺 bakeries and don’t forget to invite all your friends to the page.
