VALE FRANK GOLDSTEIN
1943-2025
After leaving the Sunshine Coast, I made my way down to the Gold Coast to visit a Coast bakery icon. I was going to a bakery that started 80 years ago and the story behind the 🥧’s is quite phenomenal and I can’t wait to share it with you all. I was heading to one of Goldsteins Pie Shop & Bakery 8 locations to meet third generation baker and owner Josh.
This journey started when Josh’s great grandfather immigrated to Australia and worked as a cook in the army. In 1944 he opened up the very first Goldstein’s 🥧 shop in Roma St Brisbane. In 1957 the Goldstein’s Gold Coast dynasty began when the very first location was opened up in Surfers Paradise. In 1962 Josh’s great grandfather passed away when his father Frank was just 16, then Frank was suddenly thrusted into the family business with the help of his brother John. 80 years later there are 8 locations, open 7 days a week, employing over 90 staff.
As you would expect with a bakery that’s 80 years old, there a decent variety of 🥧’s on the menu. From traditional to gourmet the menu has just about everything for everyone. This week I wanted to review something basic and something that has worked on the menu for a very long time and that was the “Steak, Cheese & Bacon” The crew said it was one of the biggest selling Goldstein 🥧’s and I was keen to give it a test run.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.50 is getting up there for SCB, but it’s still reasonablly priced. Even though the price was creeping there the 🥧 was still a decent size all around and weighed just above industry standard. 7.5/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full !!! No more could have been squeezed into this 🥧. 10/10
3. Flavour – The flavour of this 🥧 was great. The meat chunks were quite big and cooked right through. The bacon was real bacon so to speak and tasted fantasic. The only real negative and this was just my opinion was the 🥧 could have done with a little bit more cheese. Apart from that the overall flavour of this 🥧 was great and more than acceptable. Thoroughly enjoyed. 8/10
4. Pastry – The overall pastry of this 🥧 was very good. The ever important shape, color, shrinkage and stability couldn’t be faulted. The pastry flavour was excellent and tasted great. The bottom bake and thickness was just about spot on. Only negative was the top bake was a little think and slightly underbaked. As mentioned above the overall pastry was more than satisfactory. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect temp. 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 44/50 🥧🥧
Goldstein’s have been around for 80 years and there’s a good reason for this. This steak, bacon and cheese 🥧 was great as was all the other 🥧’s I sampled that day. The only real negative was the top bake and thickness and apart from that all the scores were quite consistent. The pastry, flavour were very good and the price was more than acceptable. As far as “steak, bacon & cheese” 🥧’s go this was certainly up there. Great job team.
As mentioned many times earlier Goldstein’s is more than just a 🥧 shop and if you haven’t tried one of their 🥧’s your missing out. 100% add this iconic 🥧 shop to your ever growing 🥧 list.
A massive thanks to Josh and the rest of the team for having me in and allowing me to share his families incredible 🥧 journey. There are not many bakeries that can say, that after 80 years they are still kicking goals. This success has been built on family values, dedication and many years hard work. Josh your families 🥧 journey is quite remarkable and one I’m so honoured to share with my followers. To hear of your dads passing last week was extremely sad, as from what I’ve been told he was a absolute legend and a icon of this industry. My sincere condolences to your family, he will be sadly missed.
