The 2026 🥧 tour continues to roll south and gee wizz this area has some cracking 🥧 joints, I seem to be finding each and every one of them. My next review was tipped to me, by the team at Bakewise. Jesse recently installed an oven at the Bodalla General Store, and whilst doing so smashed a few 🥧’s. He said “ Not only are the 🥧’s sensational the owners are great people”.
The Bodalla General Store is located in a little south coast town in Bodalla, NSW. It’s been a huge few months for the team. Recently they moved the business back to the original Bodalla General Store building. This move has significant sentimential value for owner Sharan who is essentially returning home. Her parents bought the general store at 81 Princes Highway in 1972.
The building has undergone a massive facelift and offers a fresh start for her and her husband David, who is also the pastry chef. These two 🥧 legends had been
successfully running Bodalla Bakery directly across the road at 66 Princes Highway for the past 20 years. The Bodalla Bakery has been around since 1870 which is phenomenal and now has been re-born as Bodalla General Store.
What Sharan and David have done to this place is quite astonishing. The renovations have come up a treat, the color scheme and interior decour is bright and alive. Apart from the stunning cabinet display you can also purchase a large variety of locally sourced products and gifts. Then there’s the 🥧 warmer, totally full, I was keen to get started.
The team have created an awesome menu with an excellent variety of flavours to choose from. There was one on the list I was particularly keen to try, David’s “Mexican 🥧”. I’ve had a few of these over my time and I am always up to trying this particular flavoured 🥧.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – Only a tight arse would have issues paying the $6.50 price tag. This was an average size 🥧 and weighed above the industry standard which is excellent value in my opinion 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally full !! Excellent meat to pastry fill. 10/10
3 Flavour – Minced beef, taco seasoning, beans, sour cream, cheese and David’s secret chilli sauce. This overall flavour was great. Yes, Davids secret 🌶️ sauce had a little kick to it, but the sour cream and cheese softened the chilli and that made it a flavour mild enough for most mexican 🥧 lovers. Great job mate, really enjoyable 8/10
4. Pastry – Once again the pastry was excellent and almost spot on. Color, shape, shrinkage and most importantly the stability were all very good. All of David’s 🥧’s have an excellent golden colour to them and they look great. The top bake and bake thickness were great but the bottom bake had a slight wet line which was evident in the pics. Apart from that the pastry quality was very good. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect !!! No issues. 10/10

This was a quality Mexican 🥧 and one I would easily have again. First bite to last was sensational and the flavour for me was the best part. The $6.50 price tag won’t scare you away and all David’s 🥧’s are completely full. Only real aspect to work on was the bottom bake and this could’ve easily been a once off. David’s pastry colour is another highlight as is his creativity which is evident in the masterful flavours he makes. Great product and one I would easily have again. Great job team.
Sharan, David, and the entire team I cannot thank you enough for having me into your wonderful business and allowing me to share your incredible 🥧 journey. As already mentioned the bloody, sweat and tears you have put into this place is mind blowing and the local community and passing travelers are benefiting from this wonderful recently re-opened general store. David your a sensational baker and that shines through your products, this was a great visit and I will 100% be back again.
In my opinion, there are three must stops in the wonderful
little town. The newly renovated general store, the pub, and the quirky hippie joint across the road. There is heaps of parking around town and plenty of room for caravans. 100% add these places to your Bodalla travel plans.
