The second bakery to be reviewed on this Canberra mini tour is the Garran Bakery. This hidden gem is located in the little shopping complex at 18 Garran Place Garran ACT. The bakery was opened in 1996 by long time baker Dean. Dean has been in the industry for over 40 years and is assisted by his daughter April who runs the front of house.
This father and daughter team is incredible and for a little bakery the place gets very busy. The day of my visit, the flow of customers was never ending. After meeting the team it was time to get cracking and check out the 🥧 warmer.
There is 12 plus options to choose from here and they are all your traditional flavours including the infamous “steak & kidney”In the end I decided to run with one of their most popular 🥧’s and that was “Steak & Mushroom” From the moment it came out of the warmer I knew it was the right choice.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $7.50 IMO was really solid value. The 🥧 was a decent size and weighed above industry standard. I’m reviewing a tonne of 🥧’s in that $7 to $8 range and this is still good value. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – 95% full, a couple of small air pockets, but apart from that it was a excellent meat/fill ratio. 9.5/10
3. Flavour – Really enjoyable !! Nothing flash or fancy just a really good old school flavoured 🥧. The mince was lovely and the mushroom were diced and could be tasted with every bite. The gravy sauce was on point and wasn’t runny one bit. Well done team thoroughly enjoyed. 8.5/10
4. Pastry – The color caught my eye straight away, the top of the 🥧 was golden and flakey. Shape was great, hardly any shrinkage and the stability was perfect. The top bake thickness was perfect, but the bake itself was a smidge under done (wet line) The top bake thickness was a smidge too thick and slightly underbaked. This was nothing major and could easily be a once off. Overall a few minor points to work on but the baking team has done a pretty good job with this pastry. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – Perfect serving temp, zero issues here 10/10

I can clearly understand why this particular flavor is a best seller here. It was a really solid product and one I would easily have again. The five scoring categories were very consistent and to be honest there wasn’t a whole heap to work on. The flavor to me was my favorite, just old school
Ingredients that works a treat. Dean mentioned he keeps things pretty simple here and it works and I will 100% back that up. Well done team, great stuff.
Another hidden gem that’s a must visit. All the products are top shelf, great coffee and a beautiful seating area out the front. 100% recommended.
I’m so glad I reached out to the team and lined up this review. Dean your a bloody legend mate, it was awesome sitting down with you chewing the fat and listening to your 🥧 journey. You have worked your ass off over the last 30 years and you deserve every success that comes your way. April thank you so much for your hospitality, you have the front of house running like a well oiled machine. Your cabinet and food display is impecible, well done. All the best guys and you will 100% be seeing me again.
