Fussy Meats Cockburn
(Perth WA)
This next WA review had me a little excited and worried at the same time. A few days prior, I connected up with a guy called Chris from Fussy Meats Cockburn and dead set I think this bloke could be a bigger lunatic than me. We chatted for ages and agreed on a time to catch up. Visiting butcher shops is becoming the norm these days, as more and more butchers are making and selling homemade pies in their shops.
Fussy Meats has been providing to the people of Perth since 1975, priding itself on old style traditional butchery services with a modern twist. Delivering some of the finest free range produce from all over Australia, the Fussy crew pride themselves on paddock to plate ethically farmed meats.
As mentioned above Fussy Meats has been around since 1975 and Chris has been at the helm for the last 25 years. Not only do they supply some of the best meat in the Perth area, this joint pumps out over 2500 pies per week, that’s pretty incredible for a butcher shop. The business employs a truck load of staff and now has 3 locations scattered around the Perth area.
This was another review where the cabinet display was impeccable, from 🥩 to 🥧’s the the cabinet was totally full and the range was off the charts. The look of the pies in particular was next level, and they all had this distinctive hand made decorative pasty top. I couldn’t wait to get started.
For a butcher shop the selection on offer was great with many flavors available. I was particularly keen to try Chris’s chunky steak and pepper. This particular flavored pie is my all-time favorite and oh my God this one looked incredible.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8.50 is up there for sure but this beast weighed in at 332 grams which is considerably more than than industry standard. The diameter and depth with both excellent as well. The weight of this pie and the fill quantity makes this very affordable. 9/10
2. Meat & Fill Ratio – Just take one look at the pictures. This 🥧 was completely full. 10/10
3. Flavour – Absolutely loved it. The flavor was up there with the best steak and pepper 🥧 I’ve had. I gave a 50/50 perfect a few years ago for a steak and pepper 🥧 and the flavour was very close to this one. The meat as you would expect was cooked beautifully, and the chunks were huge. The pepper mix was the perfect blend, tasty but not overdone. It was still more than enough. Great job guys, love this flavor. 10/10
4. Pastry – Apart from being slightly underbaked in each of the top corners, the pastry was absolutely perfect. The color, shrinkage, stability, and the shape could not be faulted. This was a heavy pie and when tipped upside down, it did not move. The bake and thickness were all spot on, the guys have done a really great job with this one.
9/10
5. Serving Temperature – Serving temp was perfect no issues 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 48/50🥧🥧
This was a quality product and everything about it was perfect or near about’s. The flavor was a clear stand out for me, it was simply stunning. The scores across the board were very consistent and there’s not much Chris needs to change or tweak. If you head over to Perth, and you don’t visit this place you’ve got rocks in your head. I now know why so many people had messaged me telling me to add this place on my list. Outstanding job guys, highly recommended.
I can now confirm that Chris is a bigger lunatic than me and what a ripping fella he is. What he has achieved over the last 25 years is absolutely incredible. For a butcher shop who sells 2500 🥧’s a week are serious numbers and that takes one hell of an effort. One of Chris’s best traits was, he was willing to ask questions, seek constructive feedback and wants to be better. It was great to meet you legend stay in touch.
