2025 Pyney’s 🥧 Reviews
Review No 30
Farrar & Sons Bakehouse
(Mayfield NSW)
April 2025
The Central Coast and Newcastle 🥧 tour is well and truly ramping up, I had booked in 11 odd reviews in 4/5 days so this was going to be a monumental effort and a challange I was up clearly up for. Next on the list was a family run joint at Mayfield called Farrar & Sons Bakehouse. I got the tip on this bakery a few months ago and couldn’t wait to meet the team.
The bakery has been in operation for many years, but owners Sally, husband Scott and son Tristan took over this place 3 years ago. Both Sally and Scott had no official baking experience when they took over, only Tristan who has been in the game for the last 14 years and had a dream to own and operate his own place.
When they took over 3 years ago the place needed a lot of work and the team have rolled up their sleeves and have totally transformed this place. In fact they have gone so good they took out 🇦🇺 small business champion in 2024 and were finalists in 2025.
The selection of food on offer here is exceptional, the cabinets are full, if not bursting out with stunning cakes, sweet treats, sandwiches and savory’s. While only a small serving space, I was blown away by the amount of people that were coming and going with queues normally out the door. So I decided to get cracking before they ran out of 🥧’s
This place had an outstanding amount of variety on its menu board. Every single classic bakery favourite is here. There is also a epic range of “Grandpa’s” selections this is a range of old style traditional family favourites baked fresh in house by Tristan’s beloved Grandpa himself. At 80 this legend comes into the bakery each week and makes these bad boys. Choosing a 🥧 to review was a easy choice for me despite the huge variety. I wanted to try their traditional plain meat 🥧. The locals froth over it and I was keen to see how it went.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $4.30 !!! Yes you heard me the first time, this 🥧 was $4.30 and it’s officially the cheapest 🥧 I’ve ever reviewed. It was threaded chunky steak, not mince which makes this price tag even crazier. The 🥧 weighed 261 grams which is fantastic. Astronomical value and one that’s way too cheap in my opinion. 10/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Yep full to the top and almost bursting at the seams. Great value. 10/10
3. Flavour – Bloody beautiful. This plain meat 🥧 did have some serious flavour. Slow cooked threaded chunky steak a little bit of onion and a fantastic grazy sauce. The meat was super tender and the onions gave the 🥧 the little extra flavour. The boys have have done a awesome job with this one. I thoroughly enjoyed smashing my way through this 🥧. 9/10
4. Pastry – The overall standard of this pastry was pretty damn good. The color, stability, shape and shrinkage were all well above average. Being cooked in an aluminum tin, I thought the bottom would be soft and soggy, but it was far from the case. The base held firm right to the very last bite. The bakes thicknesses were on the money, while the bakes itself needed a smidge more time in the oven. Not much to work on here, Tristan and the boys have done a great job on this one. 8/10
5. Serving Temperature – No issues with the serving temp at all. 10/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 47/50 🥧🥧
This was truly a fantastic product and wasn’t far away from the perfect 🥧. The $4.30 price tag, still astounds me. It’s seriously the cheapest 🥧 I’ve reviewed. There’s an old saying you pay for what you get, well in this case you’re getting a beautifully cooked 🥧 and it’s worth every cent. The flavour and pastry were both awesome and the 🥧 was completely full. Well done legends, you’ve nailed this one. 100% add this place to your list. The prices and products are sensational and trust me you won’t be disappointed.
A huge thanks to Sally for getting back to me and inviting me in to their wonderful bakery. It was a shame I didn’t get to meet the boys, but one things guaranteed, i will be back. What the team have achieved here is nothing short of incredible. The hard work and hours they put into this place is off the charts and they deserve every success that comes there way.
