Over the next six to seven weeks, I’ll be sharing a number of reviews I did on a recent trip to Tasmania. The main purpose of this trip to Tassie was to MC a wedding for a very good friend. My friend Jarrod happens to be one of the best young bakers in the country, and a very astute judge at all the industry events. So I took this opportunity while I was in Tassie to get out to some bakeries and 🥧 joints that I may have missed during my previous visit in 2022.
First on the list was Connor from Empiere Eats and Seventy Acres. When I posted I was coming to Tasmania, Conner reached out to me and asked me to come up and visit him at Ulverstone. Connor operates a wicked 🥧 van and has recently opened a new café in town.
Like myself Connor is a proud QLD’er and has only been in the apple aisle for 2 and a 1/2 years. His 🥧 journey started in Townsville where he started making 🥧’s in his family’s shop (Whites Corner Store). They soon went viral and he couldn’t keep up with the demand, his 🥧’s even won a gold medal at
The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.
The move to Tassie was for family and lifestyle reasons but this legend hasn’t looked back. He first bought a food truck, which is parked up around the Ulverstone area and can be seen at all community events and food markets. Then 6 months ago opened up a little café in the main street of Ulverstone. The day of my visit I met Connor at the food van and couldn’t wait to try out his beast like 🥧’s
One thing Connor does is come up with new recipes and flavors all the time, but for the regulars there is a still a good range of 🥧’s that are a permanent fixture on his menu. I did try one of his new seafood combination 🥧’s , which was fantastic (prawn and scallop) then his (beef, cheese & maple bacon) that too was sensational. For the purpose of rhis review I was particularly interested in his slow cooked beef with smoked hickory sauce, corn, smoked beans, and melted cheese 🥧 !!! Gee that’s a mouthful to pronounce and I was hoping it tasted as good as it looked.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – Yes at $15 it’s one of the dearest 🥧’s I’ve seen and reviewed. Before you start your fingers typing you need to consider all of the 🥧’s sold here weigh in excess of 360grams. That’s approximately 140grams above industry standard or 40% bigger than the average 🥧. These are enormous 🥧’s and a normal person would struggle to get through one. In my opinion at $15, they are reasonably priced 7/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Totally choc a block !!! As was all of his 🥧’s. 10/10
3. Flavour – The overall flavour was of this world. You could taste every single ingredient in this 🥧 with every bite. The more you tasted the better it got, and I absolutely loved the barbecue hickory sauce. One thing I was initially concerned about was the amount of cheese in this 🥧, but I shouldn’t have been. It was the perfect blend and really added to the overall flavour. Outstanding job Connor I loved this flavour. 10/10
4. Pastry – The pastry surprised me, particularly in the stability department. These 🥧’s are bloody heavy, so the base has to be stable and well built. Shape and color were ok, as was the bake thicknesses. The top bake was perfect, while the bottom bake had a slight wet line which can just be seen. The flavour of this pastry was sensational and as previously mentioned the stability was excellent. Overall good job mate. 8.5/10
5. Serving Temperature – No issues with the temp. 10/10

Connor makes a quality product and an award winning one at that. The flavor in this was unbelievable and couldn’t be faulted. It was full and served at the perfect temperature, and the pastry was terrific. Don’t be alarmed this beast like 🥧will stand the test of time and will not fall apart. The elephant in the room is certainly the price and at $15 it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but you need to consider the weight and 360grams is a monster of a 🥧. Connor great job mate. I loved the flavor of this 🥧. In fact I loved all your flavors and would have no hesitation recommending these 🥧’s to any 🥧 lover out there. Once again some will baulk at the price, but trust me you 100% need to try these 🥧’s either at the food van or at his café in Ulverstone.
A massive thanks to Connor for reaching out, plus taking the time to show me around his epic little cafe and the food van. It takes some serious balls to leave a place you’ve called home for all your life, then relocate and start all over again. Connor has done this and done this well, yes, no doubt it’s been hard work, but he’s now reaping the rewards and doing a fantastic job. Your nailing it bro and you’ve only just started the this new 🥧 journey. Stay in touch legend.
