Double Duck Smoke House & BBQ
(Newcastle NSW)
April 2025
This next review was something a little different and one I was super excited about. I was on my way to Newcastle‘s newest smokehouse and BBQ joint. This place popped up on my feed a few months ago and the quality of the food caught my attention. After doing some research it turns out the Double Duck Smokehouse & BBQ sells a range of gourmet home made 🥧‘s. With that info in hand I quickly made some calls and lined up a review.
The Double Duck is located at 65 Stewart Ave Hamilton South and is the brain child of superstar trio Tyler, Sheldon and Georgina. At a change meeting between Tyler and Sheldon lead the two to become good friends and then they decided to open up their own brisket joint at the end of 2023. With the help of Tyler’s sister Georgina the 3 have created a place of good vibes and sensational food. Speaking of food once opened the lads then decided to dabble in homemade 🥧’s and that was the sole purpose of my visit.
The place has a small but very effective variety of 🥧’s on the menu. 4 brisket falvours, each very different and unique. I couldn’t help myself and tried all 4, but for the purpose of this review I went with the brisket, jalapeño and cheese.
🥧 THE REVIEW 🥧
1. Value for Money – $8.50 is more than reasonable, considering the quality of the brisket meat that filled this 🥧. The 🥧 was also a decent size in depth and diameter. Whilst I didn’t get he actual weight of this thing, but in my opinion it looked and felt around industry standard. 9/10
2. Meat/Fill Ratio – Almost full, only a few small air pockets here and there that possibly could have been filled. 9/10
3. Flavour – Absolutely sensational !!! The brisket melted in your mouth and the natural juices from the brisket really gave this 🥧 some added flavour. The jalapeños and cheese were the supporting acts but combined with the brisket perfectly. In my opinion this was a perfect flavoured 🥧 and I loved every bite. 10/10
4. Pastry – To be honest there wasn’t much wrong with this pastry. The color was really good, a couple dark spots on top but nothing serious. The shape, shrinkage and more importantly the stability were on all point. The top bake and thickness were spot on in my opinion. The bottom bake was a smidge too thick and ever so slightly underbaked, this could have easily been a once off. Overall a couple of minor points to work on, apart from that the pasty was really good. 9/10
5. Serving Temperature – A smidge too hot, but nothing that major. 9.5/10
Overall Rating
🥧🥧 46.5/50 🥧🥧
This was a superb product from a group of legends with no baking experience what so ever. All five scoring categories were extremely consistent with the flavour waa the absolute stand out for me. That brisket melted in your mouth, and I loved the natural juices it created. $8.50 is priced very well and the 🥧 was just about full. The pastry was also very good, the stability held firm and I loved the top bake. Great job guys, your 🥧’s rock and I’m so glad I reached out and popped in.
If you don’t add this joint to your must visit food places you’ve got rocks in your head. But be warned the 🥧’s sell out very fast, so you’ve gotta be quick.
A massive thanks to the entire team at the Double Duck for having me in and taking to time to share their story with me. This was such an enjoyable review and Tyler’s 🥧 journey was very inspiring. Going out on your own and seting up your own business is very daunting and risky but can be very rewarding and these guys are doing a sterling job. The hard work they have put into this place is mind blowing and wish them all the very best. I cannot wait to get back again and smash some more 🥧’s.
The Central Coast and Newcastle reviews will continue roll on for the next few weeks at least. Next on the list will be
Sutcliffe Meats Glendale then a old school bakery that’s Millers Pie & Sandwich Bar.
As always thanks for the ongoing support and keep supporting 🇦🇺
